Im thinking body image and the pressures to have the perfect ballet body may have something to do with this. At 16 when you go through so many changes it is a tough time in general.

Hi all i read an interesting article here is a small paragraph.

One of the most acclaimed ballet dancers of our time has hinted that the classical art is in crisis.

'We need more girls... girls are non-existent,' said Carlos Acosta, 40, of the lack of top-level female ballet dancers, those of an equal stature to himself.

The Royal Ballet school of London agrees with him, revealing that while over the last few years overwhelmingly more girls apply in younger years, by age 16 there are more boys than girls actually studying at the School.

'Our directors have found it more of a challenge to find really talented girls in the past few years. The wave of talented boys has continued as the myth that ballet is for girls is even more widely dispelled,' said a spokesperson for the school

Any thoughts on this. The thing i find interesting is that it says by 16 there are more boys than girls.

I wanna hear stories about these dance moms. Yes for now my daughter is definatley more interested in ballet.

Finding out alot being on this forum. Didn't know gymnastics and ballet don't mix as kid gets older. My daughter isn't that short but its her frame that's very small and skinny always thought that would be better for gymnastics. But she loves ballet and dancing and for now she's only going to be doing it for fun cant wait till she starts her classes.

Its a tough one even though she will be doing it for fun if later on she wants to take it seriously. My dd has a tiny frame and is skinny so probably that would suit gymnastics more. But it also depends on what she enjoys and she loves dancing.

I havent seen dance moms actually. Not that it would bother me your always going to get parents who are to pushy in any field. In my daughters class ill get to stay and watch. Im lookint forward to see her dance.

I keep hearing about mummy drama lol. Im guessing some people have experinced some competitive parents.

Its good to get all sorts of advice, as eventually she may want to pursue it seriously. For now biggest thing will be to keep it fun.

I didn't know the learning of the technique started at 8. I can see why dancers start so young it takes years to learn. So I take it the older you get the more lessons you need to take.

Its only ballet lessons for now not a school. It seems like a rewarding thing to do. She did ballet for 2-3 year olds for the last few months and really enjoyed it and was still dancing when the lesson finished. We will see if its something she continues to pursue. Anyone have a child who is serious about ballet and wants to pursue it.

That's a good point about the other skills shed learn that aren't about the dancing itself. She definitely wants to do it for the dance as she enjoys dancing. And the first lesson is a taster lesson.

Thanks she will be doing tap as well as she enjoys watching Shirley temple. She definitely wants to do it. And will make sure its fun for her.

Hi im new to the forum, my daughter is 4 in september and will be starting ballet with a well established teacher. Shes already showing a passion for ballet and has pushed me to get her into a class. Has anybody got any advice for a young child starting out in ballet. Many thanks.
