I recognized that name of his project and that was a lovely statement by him I think. His documentary "Dancer" has been received here very well, becoming a box office success and that was a happy thing for me because I did contribute a little program note for the brochure of the theatrical release of the film in Japan.

Anyway, people should not criticize you just because you are a fan and showed you passion on this forum, this is how we write our thoughts towards dance and dancers.

Thank you Naomi for your kind words!

And wow, this is really cool! All the fans I spoke to, were very impressed by the care of details of the materials produced for Dancer in Japan! 👏🏻👏🏻
I have found very nice also the posters created by the students of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts!

I agree perfectly with you Naomi and with your previous post.

In Munich I met a young Japanese woman who came from Tokyo specifically to see Polunin dancing and she told me she had met him after an event in Japan - maybe the presentation of Dancer? and asked him if he enjoyed his stay there, and him, kindly as usual, told her that he was absolutely fascinated by Japanese culture and that he was taking advantage of his stay to deepen some concepts in particular ... Perhaps he was already thinking about his piece, who knows? :)

I read about "Satori" in reference to haiku, which I especially love. If I remember well, it was an essay about the "haiku moment": the description was very beautiful, something like the moment when man becomes one with the environment and so becomes part of the eternity of the universe. And as the haiku moment is the heart of the haiku, satori is the heart of the Zen and gives to men a new viewpoint of seeing the ordinary things.
I can understand well why Polunin is so fascinating from this!

Thank you very much for the link to this interview Lilian, it's really interesting! I have to say, our young man also has a wonderful voice ^_^
Graham Norton was very impressed by the fact that such a young man has already reached so much in his life.

Confess to us, Liliana, is he part of the conspiracy too?

It's my pleasure Cat. You are fun! :D

It is clear that you are an enormous fan.  Just because people say something that is less than total admiration for Polunin, doesn't mean they are ridiculing him.  And as I said in my previous post, the word "sacrifice" is a subjective one.

    See you? It's totally interchangeable.

Well it was me, not Lilian88 that posted a video of a Japanese department store, and saying so is a bit insulting (or racist comment) for the Japanese market as well as to Lilian88. (as I am Japanese) , although I am not a fan club member.  Please pay respect for other forum members although we value different opinions.

The funny thing is that I think there isn't an actual fan club. If it existed, obviously I would enroll myself immediately, since I apparently direct it, but there is not. Are there still many fanclubs in the world or is it now considered something "vintage"? Or maybe it's just something more connected to the world of music ...
Anyway, talking about nice things, it seems that Polunin was particularly impressed by Japan, I think he has been there on several occasions and considering the name of his new project, Japanese culture has been a great inspiration for him. If I understand correctly, "Satori" is a term related to the spiritual rebirth and, personally, I find it beautiful, both as meaning and as sound

    You think?

A lifetime of sacrifices?  Mr. Polunin was 23 when he gave up the rigours and daily grind of ballet by leaving the Royal Ballet.  Maybe I am old, but 23 does not seem like a lifetime to me.

Renunciation of what, exactly? And for what?  The opportunity to play tail-end Charlie in an ill-judged remake which is nothing more than a star-studded vehicle in which Sergei has a walk-on.  Can one really compare posing in a cloak outside a West End cinema to taking curtain calls at ROH?

Mr. Polunin has made his choice and good luck to him.  But don't lets have any nonsense about sacrifice and renunciation.  The real heroes, for me, are those like Edward Watson who, largely unsung, continue to perfect their art year after year.  They do not seek fame for its own sake and prefer the barre in the rehearsal room to being 'papped' in the street.

Well, actually I said that after a life of sacrifices, the red carpet is the place that dancers should always have, so I mean dancers in general, which deserve much more attention that a football players for example.  But if you ask me about it, yes, I definitely think Polunin's life has been full of sacrifices, considering that he had to renounce to his childhood, his adolescence, and his family, growing alone, in a foreign country with the constant anguish of being the only hope to give a better life to his family before, and with guilty feelings later, because he thought his career had caused his parents divorce. Maybe you think that the most important thing for a top dancer is to be doing his class every day, but other like me prefer to see an artist and not an employee.
And if the fact of posting some photos and expressing my appreciation for my favorite dancer in the topic dedicated to him, makes me the head of his fan club ... Well, cool it was really easy!
And at this point I wonder how to define people who comment only to criticize him and ridicule whatever he does ... And then I wonder who you are and what have you done so extraordinary in your life to judge the sacrifices of others, or to judge the choices of others, or to judge my personal tastes and motivations that push me and all the other hundreds of Polunin fans to be his great admirers. But than, thinking better about it, I realized I'm not interesting at all to know who you are, I'm interested in talking about Polunin and his art in the topic dedicated to him, and if you're not interested, nobody obliges you to honor us of your regal presence, though I have to admit a certain fun reading your scornful comments.

Don't get me wrong Lilian88 I'm enjoying your posts!

unfortunately I'm not exactly a whizz with technology but I wonder if posting the links to your piccies and videos if you are going to fo several etc might make the page easier to handle!

just got a bit frustrating when the page kept closing and reloading ...closing and reloading etc etc

Maybe our local wifi exchange  is not as fast as could be!!

I shall look forward to seeing Polunin as Soloviev in the new film anyway

Lin I'm really sorry if I created problems loading the page, actually I basically posted only links because I thought they were lighter than photos, but maybe I do something wrong...
Anyway, I'm very curious about Soloviev's role. A friend sent me a translation of a Russian interview that unfortunately I cannot find anymore where Polunin explained that he was very interested in the figure of Soloviev and in his tragic story and that he considers it his best role.

  7. This is a communication of the Bayerische Staatsballet a few days ago:

"SERGEI POLUNIN AT THE BAYERISCHES STAATSBALLETT
    10/26/2017
Dear fans of the Bayerisches Staatsballett and of Sergei Polunin,
the talks about the next performances of Sergei Polunin in Munich are still in process. Once dates have been confirmed, we will announce them immediately on all channels, including our homepage, the schedule, our social media channels and our newsletter."

Apparently, the amount of requests for Polunin's presence are making them crazy. It's so nice to see so much enthusiasm for the ballet!

I appreciate people may be enthusiastic fans of Polunin but perhaps not quite SO many piccies/videos on ONE page as I find this page very difficult to access as it constantly has to keep reloading because of all the photo content here etc.!!

I suppose you refer to my post. I'm sorry that you find difficult to consult it, but considering that this topic it's about Sergei Polunin, I think it's normal to post photos and videos about him, regardless of being or not his fans. Also "one page" is the forum structure, if I did several posts, I suppose the problem would remain ...But if you have some suggestions  in this regard, please let me know, so I can correct my post!

But wouldn't you expect that, Lilian88? I'm not wishing to detract from the achievements of any of those dancers  but Alison Kent is based in Munich.

Well, there are different categories, so I think is logic that a critic based in Munich decided about the dance in Munich, don't you think? And despite this, I didn't expect it at all considering this certain anti-Zelensky attitude in the air.

But I'm very happy for Osiel Guneo, which was nominated also in other categories and by other critics, I hope I will see soon him dance!

  10. Project Polunin presented the full program of December performances at the London Coliseum.

Satori, this is the fascinating title of the work, will include:
"First Solo" by Andrey Kaydanovskiy, "Scriabiniana" by Kasyan Goleizovsky and "Satori", choreographed by Polunin himself.
The complete cast is still to be announced.

Polunin was also named by the Evening Standard among the londons most influential people of 2017 in the category "performers: theatre and dance":

"You can’t deny the star power of Ukrainian dancer Sergei Polunin, 27, bringing ballet to places other performers just can’t reach. More than 20 million YouTube views for his Take Me to Church video directed by David LaChapelle, a brilliantly candid documentary, Dancer, roles in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express film and a new Jennifer Lawrence movie it all adds up to the kind of global recognition that’s rare among dancers."

  11. Some updates and news about the poor Polunin and his sad life as lost child who wasted his talent.
Polunin's stay in Munich ended with a brilliant performance in La Bayadère, very applauded by the audience and with a crowd of people waiting for him out of the theater. Here some photos and videos.

Here it's possible to see other really nice photos of the performance and the backstage by the ballet photographer Jack Devant:
    https://www.jackdevant.com
Meanwhile his documentary, Dancer, had open the Festival dei Popoli in Florence, (here some videos including a piece transmitted by the Italian national news)

Dancer it will be also presented in Kiev on this October 24 during an event that will also include a Q&A with Polunin and the producer Gabriella Tana after the screening of the film.
He is also appeared on photo-shootings for various magazine including one for WMagazine, with this nice interview:

and another for "Another Man" issue, with the title "Modern Mythologies". Here the cover:

This is the poster of his character in Murder on the Orient Express and another with the full cast:

I'm also pleased to announce that his performance as Rudolph on the last April in Munich, have gained an honorable mention among the "Outstanding Performances by a Male Dancer" of this year, chosed by the critics for Dance Europe Magazine.

We went to the cinema yesterday and the posters for “Murder on The Orient Express” are up. Polunin isn’t even mentioned on them which I found rather troubling.

Well there are so many famous people in this movie, (Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom...) I think it's quite normal that in a movie poster only the most famous names are written; it wasn't possible to include all the actors even in the group photographs or at the press conference, yet Polunin was there, and he was also the only non-famous actor to be included in the first trailer, sat in front of Willem Dafoe, a great recognition considering this is his debut as a professional actor. In addition, Kenneth Branagh, the director, talked specifically about him saying that the whole cast was deeply impressed with his dancer skills, especially with regard to action scenes, and this is a great recognition not only to him, but to dance and professional dancers in general, I think 😊

I will be howled down by the Polunin fan club, but why would anyone who can dance as sublimely as Sergei, want to spend his time on a film set where he does little more than sit in a mock-up train surrounded by stars all much more well-known than he is?  Baffled.

Why should an artist just dance when he can dance, play on the big screen, and do much more? And I wouldn't be so severe about his activity on that train, first because there are not many actors who have had a part in such a prestigious production at their first attempt (if people as Dame Judy Dench, Penelope Cruz and Willelm Dafoe didn't find this production so horrible, I don't think Polunin should have done so), second because according to the opinions of those who saw the film-preview, Polunin will do much more than sitting in a train and third because before critics someone's work, maybe should you have at least...seen the work? But off course to criticize Polunin, this is not so important, I know it.
But what I really would to know, is wich dancer would say no to Kenneth Branagh who propose to him/her to play in a hollywoodian production side by side with some of the most famous actors in the world (without considering the fear of retaliation in case their superiors disagree whit it) 🤔

Thank you for the news about Polunin's role in Red Sparrow. As far as I can see, the title of this thread remains perfectly appropriate as it does indeed cover not only news - further of which you have just confirmed - which is not synonymous with 'gossip', but also discussions, which is not synonymous with 'speculation'.

Oh I don't know, if news and discussion means 1% news and 99% speaking negatively to somebody more or less explicitly, regardless of what he does, spitting on things he has not done yet, or that he did but that we didn't see or don't know at all...Well yes, then I find the title is very appropriate.

  15. Why don't we change the name of this topic in "Sergei Polunin, gossip and speculations"? It would be more pertinent, in my opinion. Meanwhile, if anyone is interested in what Sergei Polunin actually does, the Parma Teatro Regio announced his presence in February 2018, with a version of Project Polunin featuring Echo and Narcissus and Scriabiniana.

    http://teatroregioparma.it/Pagine/Default.aspx?idPagina=845

A partnership with the Danceworks International Ballet Academy for a scholarship was also announced:

    http://www.danceworks-academy.net/scholarships

Also, I don't remember if the news has already been reported here, but Polunin will also play in another big production, the movie "Red Sparrow" with Jennifer Lawrence. It will be a smaller role than the other movie but interesting, according to the book. I don't want to spoil, so I just say that he will play a dancer and that he will be a bad guy. Not the nineteenth-century meaning of "bad" attribuited to him in the ballet-world, but really bad. There will also be Isabella Boylston, principal with ABT, who will play Jennifer Lawrence's dance scenes.

It is very much in the tradition of Mayerling that the dancer playing Rudolf takes solo curtain calls. But lovely to read that the Munich audience was so appreciative.

Yes, but I think I can say it's not in the tradition of Polunin :) He rarely come out alone, he takes always many curtains with the ballerina who play Maria Vetsera. We had to applaude really much for call him outside, but yes, the audience was very appreciative and warm!

You've rarely been to ballet performances in Germany then... ;) We can do much better than five curtains!

I am referring to the five curtain call for him alone at the end, before this there were many more, of course.

Personally I prefer the theaters with a more intimate atmosphere, especially during the show and in Germany I find me very well from this point of view, so please, take it as a positive consideration on my part :)

  17. Hi Cat, I'm glad now you're feeling better!
I had your same positive impressions of the evening.
When Shevtsova came on stage, even I trembled thinking of the pas de deux that followed shortly after, but it worked incredibly well. During the interval I tried to explain to some people that she is a substitute and he was a freelance, so not only they probably had never danced together, but maybe they hadn't even knowen each other before; they didn't believed me! .:P
Polunin was magnificent. I am always amazed at how someone who dances to his level and plays at his level, still manages to have so much attention for the overall situation and for his colleagues; when you can reasonably think that he is fully focused on himself and on his character, maybe you see him care to pick up a piece of paper that might slip his partner in her variation, for example.
I enjoyed the company of Stanislavsky too, their general skill has far exceeded the small hitches, in fact the audience was enthusiastic.
I hope that the Bayerische Staatsballet enter Mayerling in his repertoire, with the home company; it's a wonderful ballet and should be more represented in Europe

    Gastspiel aus Moskau mit “Mayerling"

    http://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.de/inhalt.ballettfestwoche-im-nationaltheater-gastspiel-aus-moskau-mit-mayerling.70b2776a-10ce-474d-ac97-5467a86d87d1.html

What a change of the partner for Polunin’s Rudolf! The blonde ‘Maria Vestera’ got injured on stage before she could be killed and was unable to continue dancing. The dark-haired Xenia Shevtsova - who had never rehearsed with Polunin and was watching the performance from the auditorium - rushed backstage, stepped in and, according to the reviewer, gave a passionate performance. Their duet was “technically a miracle”.

It was really a little miracle: she has dealt with the situation very well and Polunin has once again proven to be a great professional: If she were a step too far back, he was there, if she wrong time, he resolved the situation. At one point I was afraid that he will hurt, because she was not able to position itself well for a grip and he lift her bodily... Of course, I speak of small things, completely understandable given the situation. I love Mayerling and I know it by heart, but those who have seen the ballet for the first time didn't notice anything, that's the miracle.
