  1. Mr Gergiev is only interested in the Mariinsky Ballet as a cash cow.

I guess the same can be said about the Mikhailovsky and Mr Kekhman.

There is a number of new operas presented/scheduled at the Mikhailovsky this season, but not a single new ballet either staged or scheduled to be staged (except a one-act Class Concert presented in September, and this IMO is not enough) and under these circumstances Messerer strives to keep the Company's level on the rise.

  2. Agree with you, jellyteaa. And I also liked the FT (5 star) piece, The reinvigorated St Petersburg company’s New York debut has been a triumph

    Just two sentences from it:

On The Flames: The deft blend of old-school classicism and lusty character dancing shows off the company’s impressive stylistic range.

On DQ: Messerer’s 2012 production is played and danced with all the zest missing from Carlos Acosta’s Royal Ballet version.

    (Janet, thanks for that correction.)

  3. Louise Levene reviews the Mikhailovsky in the FT and gives 5 stars to each The Flames and DQ, but 3 stars to the triple bill (it would appear from the context that she took away 2 stars for her dislike of the Duato piece). There is also a nice picture by Paul Kolnik there.
