There have been some inspirational stories on this thread & it's given me so much to think about.

However I am coming to the conclusion that we have made a big mistake - albeit for the best of intentions.

Dd dreamed of studying dance full time in an environment with like minded children but its not happening. I just wonder at what point do I step in & pull her out. I hate to see her so unhappy.

We've been told that lots of performers have HFA or Aspergers (quite a few actors apparently) & one of our child's teachers is on the spectrum.

Also the current school were very quick to pick up on the social problems whereas the previous school never suggested any problems.

I agree that not all ASD children have a talent but they do seem to have obsessions (which may or may not change over time & which rule their lives.

One of my children has had various obsessions which are seen by their school as a problem because it prevents them getting on with what they are supposed to be doing (Thomas the Tank, Pokemon , now Minecraft)

The other child's obsession of dancing was never really seen as a problem before.

Both children are perfectionists & have meltdowns if they can't do things first time.

I'm usually known under another username but have logged in for this under a different account - hope that's OK.

I so wondered if any members had any experience of having dancing children with SEN. Specifically how they cope with the pressure of vocational training, socialising/fitting in etc.

It's defiantly not common practice in the UK.

I wonder who is paying the agent? Agents take on clients who they think can get paid work and as most vocational schools don't allow their children to take on paid work it would be pointless.

One difference may be that UK laws state that a contract entered into by a minor can not be enforced in that they are legally able to cancel up until the age if majority (think its used in football more than in performing as clubs used to try and tie in young players)

Therefore it isn't to an agents advantage in the UK to try and cream off the best talent until they are actually free to work.

Dd is going into year 7 in sept and her friend from dance is going into year 5 in sept. I don't think her little friend has a phone. Dd has one but she's in a dance show tonight and tomorrow (matinee & evening ) & I don't think they're supposed to have their phones on at the theatre. Pm me & ill see what I can do

I don't know but just be aware that the half terms are not the same everywhere next year.

Anyone's dc going? Dd went last year but because we booked late she had to commute. She is residential this year & is excited(too many Malory Towers books)

One class a week is definately not enough.

It sounds like your teacher isn't in a position to offer more classes so is offering these privates as an alternative.

They do a similar thing at my children's scho at prize day for the year 6's. you have to take a then and now photo in and they do a fiilm thing to music

DS cried when they put dds picture up.

She left junior school a couple if weeks ago, she left Stagecoach last week and she leaves dance after the show next week.

Definatly the end of an era.

You say on top of her normal class. At her age and grade I would expect at least two classes per week (more leading up to age 16)

Dd has been having a few private lessons in preoaration for vocational school because time tabling and other issues means she can only do 1 class per week and another per fortnight. Its only been for a few months though.

Looking forward to receiving a ballet shoe picture from you just ballet. It's a goodbye present for dds current teacher.

They also said they preferred the nags not to be too big or heavy. They need one bag for school books and one bag for dance kit.

I'm trying to remember exactly what they said but it was something to do with the narrow school corridors and another student was bashed by someone wheeling a case behind them. They said it wasn't safe to have everyone wheeling bags around.

Dd used to have a fringe and decided (against my wishes) she wanted to grow it out. It took about 2 years in total!

At Hammond induction there were a couple of boys unhappy they were going to have to cut their hair.

I quite like that one 2dancers but the list does say they have to be black or dark coloured with no bright or sparkly logos.

She wants something that she can manage to carry around but will fit all her stuff and be hard wearing for daily use.

They are not allowed wheels.

However if she needs them for Monday it's going to be tight. Not sure how much they'd cost to post.
