  1. ENBYouthCo is a great opportunity for anyone thinking about auditioning. Auditions are on Sunday 21st May - you can apply here

    https://www.ballet.org.uk/blog-detail/just-announced-enbyouthco-auditions/

They meet on Friday evenings at Markova House 6.30-8.30pm and also have some Sunday rehearsals/ workshops. The Summer term is relatively short and finishes before the exam season gets too intense as well. They have a fabulous Artistic Director Jo Meredith who works really hard to get the best from everyone and have wonderful opportunities to meet Company Dancers, work with great choreographers and learn a lot from each other. The standard is high and fast paced and the work has its roots in both ballet(no pointe work though and contemporary dance - They are encouraged to think of themselves as dancers first and foremost rather than ballet, or contemporary dancers and draw on each other's skills. Why not go and audition? You will find them a welcoming group and will get a better feel for whether it's for you, or not then. You can see a bit more of them here if you haven't seen this video on the website

  2. That's a lovely story to hear! I'm so pleased that NIDMS is helping some of the DCs of forum members!

Thanks drdance. We went to see our GP to start with (following an A&E visit which showed nothing on x-ray, a later MRI showed a bone stress injury) who wasn't really sure what to do with her as she felt the physios at the hospital might not be the best route, but didn't have an alternative. I went googling and came across NIDMS - what a find! The GP was only too happy to support the referral thankfully. We weren't sure DD was eligible for the Dance Clinic so rang NIDMS in the first instance and Helen Laws couldn't have been more helpful! DD is on a CAT scheme and aspires to be a dancer :)

  3. Thanks everyone for such lovely comments - I feel even more proud and good about the world now :)

You have every reason to be proud.  I went to see Chantry Dance recently with their Happy Prince tour and thoroughly enjoyed it.  The part your DD has in it is lovely (I'm assuming she is 'the girl' danced by the associates).  She will have a lovely time.

Thanks 2dancersmum, I am glad you have been able to see the company perform - I am really looking forward to seeing it in full with costume and lights on stage. The feedback for the first four shows in the tour has been fantastic; hopefully the last two will get the same response :) You're right, she is playing the part of 'the girl' and Chantry Dance Company selected three of their Associates to dance this role and the tour has been divided equally between them. All three girls have worked incredibly hard alongside the professional dancers and been very supportive of one another.

Aw congratulations to your daughter, good things come to those who wait as the saying goes. My daughter is injured at the moment and it is so stressful for them, especially when they can't dance. I hope your daughter remains injury free. I will get my daughter to look at this dance clinic you mention if her injury doesn't improve with physio and rest, it's her flexer muscles and it just happened in everyday walking I think.

Sometimes it's hard to wait isn't it Tulip? DD initially found it very hard to accept that full rest for 6 weeks is what was needed - not just doing a little bit less for a short time - and then rushing back! The care and advice she received from the Dance Clinic has really helped with her recovery. Your GP needs to refer your DD so would certainly go and see your GP to get the ball rolling if things don't improve soon.

  4. Ok this is a shameless proud mum post :)

DD has had a bit of a rollercoaster year with a foot injury at the beginning of the year to contend with and, as is often the way, a long, slow steady recovery with a few niggly hiccups - she has been supported wonderfully by the Dance Clinic team at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital to whom we're very thankful and she continues to see the lovely Physiotherapists there. This is an NHS Clinic for dancers which your GP can refer you to; our experience has been really positive. There are also clinics in Birmingham and Bath. You can find out more on the NIDMS website http://www.nidms.co.uk/injury-referral/

I am feeling very proud of her hard work and determination to keep dancing and really looking forward to seeing her dance in The Happy Prince this month with Chantry Dance Company, who have believed in her, and invited her to be a part of their Autumn Tour. She'll get a mini taste of true touring whizzing up to Halifax Square Chapel Arts Centre on Thursday 20th November and then back down to the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells to perform on Friday 21 November!

I can't help but speak as a biased Mum of course, but The Happy Prince really is a beautiful ballet. It's a triple bill - The Happy Prince, Rhapsody in Blue and the Bob Dylan ballet - do go and watch if you can :)

  5. Thanks for posting this Yaffa - looks like a wonderful opportunity. How sad that they haven't allowed a realistic time to respond though. I saw this last night, emailed DD's school, have sent the forms in with her that I printed off for her to hand to her PE department. However to ask that all applications be received by today with a clear statement on the form that applications after this date won't be considered suggests that they have preselected and don't want any further applications, when it was only posted on Weds.

My DD attends a large girls secondary school - her teachers will need to also contact and sort out an arrangement with a local boys school in order to put in a joint application ( possible as the two schools are within one federation) - a tall order to complete in one day and return on the same day! Assuming the relevant staff are in of course!

  6. Lovely review Meadowblythe :-) DD is also just starting a CAT scheme and joining Chantry Associates this September. Couldn't make the Summer school this year (sounds like one for the diary for 2014 though!) but had a great time at a 2 day workshop run jointly by Chantry Dance Company and ilDance this Summer. Lovely people and would definitely recommend.

  7. Very proud of DD who has been offered a place as a Cecchetti Senior Associate from September :-)

Like Kat09's DD, she isn't Cecchetti trained (she is RAD trained), but for the monthly Associates I think the requirement is just that you are trained in Classical Ballet. I believe it is different for the Scholars though.

  8. I wonder what my DDs would fall onto. They are British with English and Irish ancestors and they have French citizenship as well! I bet, luck having it, that they would be considered RUK rather than EU!!!

Afab I was just thinking it might be worth getting the Irish citizenship sorted! It looks pretty straightforward if your DDs have a parent or Grandparent who is Irish:

  9. Thanks for the welcomes and congrats to DD also :)

Love to hear from anyone who also has a DC appearing alongside the National Youth Dance Company (or indeed in the NYDC) who'll be at Sadler's Wells on 8th June and perhaps up for a coffee on one of the many days of rehearsals?!

  10. I confess to having lurked for a while :)  I just had to join though to be able to say thank you so much for posting this Janet. My DD did a three day workshop at Sadler's Wells in the half term and we found out today she has been selected to take part in the Riot Offspring project and will be dancing at Sadler's Wells on 8th June. She is thrilled and we've bought our tickets already!  :D
