As the UK’s leading dance house, Sadler’s Wells presents dance in all its forms to the widest possible audiences and this season shows two works by the talented young French choreographer, Noé Soulier and a piece by Frauke Requardt and Freddie Opoku-Addaie.

Noé Soulier is one of France’s most promising young choreographers and dancers. For his UK debut he presents a double bill including Le Royaume des Ombres (The Kingdom of Shadows) and D’un pays lointain (In a Country Far Away). Noé Soulier trained at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse, the National Ballet School of Canada and PARTS in Brussels.

Le Royaume des Ombres (The Kingdom of Shades) is an attempt to propose a different reading of ballet through five pieces that use typical ballet steps in a different way. Soulier’s piece aims to rediscover often forgotten, creative pieces of dance and to establish a relationship to the history of dance.

In D’un Pays lointain (In a Country Far Away) Soulier looks at ‘pantomime ballet’, what he describes as the most outdated aspect of ballet. Pantomime uses spoken word, phrases and language that don’t usually fit the medium of dance. This tension between movement, language and meaning is what Soulier is interested in addressing.

Frauke Requardt and Freddie Opoku-Addaie present The Fidelity Project, a choreographic experiment which uses memory as a tool for creating new movement. A former Associate Artist at The Place, Frauke’s recent works include Pictures from an Exhibition and Electric Hotel. Freddie Opoku-Addaie has performed and toured with Candoco Dance Company and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance among others. He was an Associate Artist at the Royal Opera House from 2009 to 2011.
