I second the Dans-ez recommendation - my DD has several. They do a higher back version that some might prefer for an audition.

It's a good idea to get a cotton one - some places use stick-on labels for the audition and they have a tendency to come off shiny leotards, as dd once found out when she saw her label stuck to the floor by her feet...!

Bloch do a very nice high leg low back cotton leotard, it's on their website and is called Sissone. DD has a couple, they are very comfortable.

Hi I recently had to buy some black leotards for an exam. I ordered both http://www.dancedirect.com/uk/Products/Ballet/P12/ this one from plume which is a lovely cut but comes down quite low at the front

And this bloch one http://www.dancedirect.com/uk/Products/Ballet/L5407/ which is very comfortable and is quite high leg but the cut is not as flattering, also note it comes up a little smaller

do the leotards have to be black for auditions?

My 10 year old dd will be auditioning this year.

I am undecided whether she should wear a black or coloured leotard for her auditions?

What do you all think?

At 10 - coloured. No need for black unless the school specifies. A plain tank or cami leotard in a colour she likes (and which suits her), ballet socks (unless tights specified), and shoes with elastics in case they want to look at her feet. Above all avoid knicker malfunction and uncomfortable leotards in case she feels the need to fiddle with straps! :-)

The right ballet leotard makes all the difference so I would recommend buying a few and trying on for good fit especially around the bottom and bust.  We have always found wear moi styles excellent!

Hi

We were advised coloured on the pale side for younger ones. They like belts as well apparently. You can go for a flesh coloured body underneath if reqd. If you have one already that does the job than use it. All the audition letters make it clear they don't want you to spend for the audition.

Our uniform leotards weren't suitable so did have to buy. As an example we found the capezio 'princess' cami in white or pink did the job. DD very skinny. Used child medium age 10 and large age 11.

At RBS Audition Insight days when they are talking about the upcoming auditions, they always recommend a coloured leotard rather than black.  They suggest you get it in good time and have the photos taken in the leotard you will wear for the audition as this helps them recognise candidates more easily during the actual audition.

Thankyou everyone for your advice. My DD is going for upper school auditions so is black or a colour leotard best? If a colour should it be one colour or two tone eg burgundy & black? Xx

Agreed coloured is best, keep to one colour - two colours can produce strange optical illusions, cutting off the classical line. The same thing goes for straps, plain is better, avoid criss cross, etc.

Thank you everybody for your help.

I did think coloured, socks, etc but it is so good to have that confirmation from others on here.

I just wish it was all over already!!

Hi Lema, JA leotards are perfect- white RBS or royal blue Elmhurst- they will get you to wear them for their own auditions anyway....

She wore a morels leotard...don't know name ... But was camisole with a half belt at the front with a little belt buckle. It was low backed but very plain apart from that .

At some auditions you might need to attach a number to the back as well as the front, so if the leotard has a very low back, check to make sure there is enough room to pin it, otherwise it will be on the bum! ;)
