John Mallinson
"This exhibition is the first to present live performances of Rainer’s dance works alongside other aspects of her practice: theoretical and lyrical writing, sketches and scores, photographs of performances, documentary and experimental films, and an audio recording of one of her early performative lectures." The exhibition runs from July 11 to August 10 at the Raven Row gallery, near Liverpool Street station. (Yvonne Rainer famously produced the No Manifesto in 1965: No to spectacle. No to virtuosity. No to transformations and magic and make-believe. No to the glamour and transcendency of the star image. No to the heroic. No to the anti-heroic. No to trash imagery. No to involvement of performer or spectator. No to style. No to camp. No to seduction of spectator by the wiles of the performer. No to eccentricity. No to moving or being moved.) Ian Macmillan
John, I fear I must have missed that. The word probably didn't make it out to the wilds of Wiltshire where I was rather busy learning to be a Navigator during 1965!
John Mallinson
Not sure that they can claim this as a first as she featured in the Hayward Gallery's MOVE: Choreographing You exhibition in 2010 which included live performance. Anyway, a must-see for hardcore modern dance aficionados and maybe nearer to your present domicile Ian.
