Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol and The Three Musketeers to be staged on two sides of the globe this autumn

Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol and The Three Musketeers are to be staged by Royal New Zealand Ballet and Alberta Ballet on opposite sides of the globe this autumn. The two companies are working with Northern Ballet’s artistic and technical teams to produce the ballets which will be performed complete with the original sets and costumes hired from the Leeds-based Company.

The Three Musketeers was last performed by Northern Ballet on their national UK tour in 2007. Originally created in 2006, The Three Musketeers is choreographed by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, who will be travelling to Calgary for three weeks to stage the production with Alberta Ballet. It will be performed in Calgary and Edmonton between 23 October and 8 November 2014.

Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol was created for the Company in 1992 by Massimo Moricone and Christopher Gable CBE, and will be performed by Royal New Zealand Ballet from 30 October to 14 December 2014. Northern Ballet’s Ballet Master, Daniel de Andrade, will travel to New Zealand to stage the ballet. He will be aided by former Northern Ballet dancers Lori Gilchrist and John Hull, now with Royal New Zealand Ballet, who performed leading roles in A Christmas Carol during Northern Ballet’s most recent tour of the production in autumn 2013.

Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive, Mark Skipper DL, said: “Northern Ballet’s work is internationally acclaimed and we are delighted to make our productions available for other companies to stage and bring to audiences worldwide. Our repertoire includes both classics and a large number of new and re-imagined productions most of which are available ‘for hire’ including some of our most recent creations: Cinderella, The Great Gatsby and Beauty & the Beast. We welcome enquiries from companies across the globe interested in staging one of our productions. We enjoy seeing our ballets produced successfully elsewhere and overseas hires contributes to the overall sustainability of the Company as we look to increase the diversity of our income streams.”

Northern Ballet offers complete productions for hire including choreography, sets and costumes as well as offering sets and costumes for hire on a stand-alone basis for professional companies. In recent years Northern Ballet’s work has been staged as far afield as the USA, South Africa and Israel and the Company offers the same level of support as when arranging their own tour, including refurbishing sets and costumes and arranging shipping. Examples of productions available for hire include: Cinderella, The Great Gatsby, Beauty & the Beast, Cleopatra, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Madame Butterfly, Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, Peter Pan, The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, The Three Musketeers, Dracula, Swan Lake, I Got Rhythm, Dangerous Liaisons, Ugly Duckling and Three Little Pigs.

I bought the DVD of Northern Ballet's Christmas Carol last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wish more companies would have a go at it, as an alternative to the everlasting Nutcrackers. I know there isn't a really compelling love story as an anchor for conventional pas de deux, but that didn't seem to be a problem for Northern Ballet.
