Powerhouse of dance perform thrilling triple bill in Leeds

Northern Ballet returns home in June with a showcase of established international and emerging choreographic talent, including the World Première of Kenneth Tindall’s The Architect. The Company will perform a Mixed Programme at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in its award-winning headquarters in Leeds from Wednesday 18 to Saturday 21 June.

The Mixed Programme of works by Hans van Manen, Lar Lubovitch and Kenneth Tindall, is a rare opportunity to see the prestigious Company up close in the intimate setting of their own home.

The Mixed Programme features Concertante by Dutch dance master Hans van Manen who has created more than 100 short classical ballets during his illustrious 60 year career with Nederlands Dans Theatre and the Dutch National Ballet, amongst many others. The Company first staged the classical piece, set to Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante, in their 2013 Mixed Programme in Leeds and Concertante returns by popular demand.

The second piece of the triple bill will be Lar Lubovitch’s Concerto Six Twenty-Two with a performance that marks Northern Ballet’s first venture with one of America’s leading choreographers. The work, choreographed in 1986 and set to Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, is an inventive portrayal of male dance duets in what has become one of Lubovitch’s most celebrated pieces.

The World Première of The Architect by Northern Ballet Premier Dancer and British choreographer Kenneth Tindall completes the programme. This is his third commission for Northern Ballet and takes inspiration from the story of Adam & Eve. The Architect will feature sets and costumes designed by Christopher Giles, who has previously collaborated with Northern Ballet on Hamlet and Cleopatra, and lighting by Alastair West. It follows the success of Kenneth’s award-winning choreographic debut Project #1 and the critically-acclaimed Luminous Junc·ture.

Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, said: “It is always a great thrill to have the opportunity to showcase the immense talent of our dancers to audiences at our home in Leeds. Performing a masterwork such as Concertante is a real challenge and demonstrates the very high standard of the Company. We’re very excited to be working with Lar Lubovitch for the first time on Concerto Six Twenty-Two. Also I am delighted for Kenneth Tindall to have the opportunity to stage the première of The Architect; it’s very important that we encourage and nurture such talent in our dancers.”
