We've been discussing what it would take to get ballet into the mainstream. Hopefully this isn't an example. But if people really think this is what ballet is about, no wonder audiences want to see hyperextensions and acrobatics.

A company called Virtuoso Imaging has published some "rival" photographs on Facebook showing a "real ballerina" - the wonderful Victoria Marr who was a leading soloist with BRB.

Why on earth Virgin Active couldn't have used some of these images is beyond me!

Red dress lady - ballerina she is not, professional ballet dancer she is not. In the last few weeks, I have seen better form from students at end of summer school performances. The lack of understanding of what it is to be a ballerina is very disheartening. Virgin Active should be ashamed of themselves!

In the early 80s, I worked on pop videos, and I remember this one made for Icehouse's "Hey little Girl" in particular.

I was in charge of props and had to dress the rooms of the old ballerina. I even had a small role, opening the door right at the beginning to the little boy! What I don't remember is where we filmed the ballet scenes. It was a ballet school. Does anyone recognise anything? It was surely the first ballet to appear in a pop video, as was at the birth of that genre.

those Virgin Active photos are rather ugly in my opinion, I'm surprised they got past the picture editors and brand managers

But then the picture editors and brand managers probably don't know anything about ballet and wouldn't know a classical line if they tripped over it ;)

When I saw this video a few days ago I found it interesting, but it really reminded me of the Christopher Walken /Fatboy Slim video Weapon of Choice. I think it must be the same director or choreographer.

This post caught my eye in LegalFutures, a blog about innovation in the law:

An advert for family law services featuring the torsos of four female ballet dancers with their arms crossed over the chests with the tagline ‘Protect your assets’, was “mild innuendo” and not offensive, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled.

That link is better than the one I saw on Facebook.  Thanks Jane.

What a flash-mob and a half led by Jenna Roberts, Celine Gittens, Delia Matthews and Yaoquian Shang!  I think I saw Laura Purkiss too and Robert Parker in the crowd!

It was filmed in Birmingham on Saturday 3rd December 2016 BTW.
