"This collective performance thrusts up out of the shadows like a clip from an old movie, a spirited jumble of hip-hop and fisticuffs" Le Monde

France’s Compagnie Käfig returns to the UK with Boxe Boxe, a show which fuses the noble art of boxing with dance. Co-presented by Sadler’s Wells and Spitalfields Music, Boxe Boxe takes place on 13 & 14 June at People’s Palace in East London as part of Spitalfields Music Summer Festival. Ahead of its visit to London, the company embarks on a national tour with Dance Consortium.

Eight dancers blend martial arts, street and contemporary dance to create Boxe Boxe. The show draws on the rich pageantry and theatricality of boxing where bright red gloves effortlessly morph into puppets and punch balls explode like featherweight balloons.

The dancers in the piece are accompanied by live music from the Debussy String Quartet, featuring music by Franz Schubert, Maurice Ravel, Philip Glass and Glenn Miller.

Boxe Boxe is choreographed by Compagnie Käfig’s Artistic Director Mourad Merzouki. Merzouki began his training in circus when he was seven and first encountered hip hop culture at as a teenager, allowing him to discover his love of dance. Merzouki decided to develop this form of street art whilst also experimenting with other choreographic styles and in 1989, along with a group of dancers, created his first company Accrorap when he was 15. In order to develop his own artistic style, Merzouki later established Compagnie Käfig. In 1996, their first production, Kafig, premiered at Les Rencontres de la Villette followed by its second full length work, R3/4cital in 1998. The production enjoyed international recognition in China, Africa, Finland, Germany, Italy, and the United States. In 2004 Compagnie Käfig performed as part of Sadler’s Wells internationally celebrated three-day festival, Breakin’ Convention.

In 2009, Merzouki was appointed Director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne, where he developed the project Dance: a window on the world. He continues to create and show his works, providing training and raising awareness about hip hop dance, as well as organising encounters to promote access to the choreographic arts and to support independent dance groups.

Spitalfields Music Summer Festival is one of Spitalfields Music’s two annual festivals, bringing intimate and large scale experiences of early music, new sonic explorations, innovative music-theatre pieces, family music-making and more to East London’s most captivating spaces including Christ Church Spitalfields, Shoreditch Church and Wilton’s Music Hall.
