Constantly absorbing and beautiful” Daily Telegraph

Following a successful national tour, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant presents Still Current at Sadler’s Wells from the Thursday 5 - Saturday 7 June 2014. The evening features three new works and two of Maliphant’s most iconic pieces and offers audiences the chance to see Maliphant perform alongside his Company of dancers; Thomasin Gülgeç, Dickson Mbi and Carys Staton.

Still Current presents a diverse physical language that integrates qualities and vocabulary from ballet, contemporary dance and martial arts that celebrates the technical strength of Maliphant’s world class company.

The evening’s performance features three new works including Still Current, a duet created for Carys Staton and Russell Maliphant, drawing on Staton’s strength and versatility as a dancer. The evening also features Traces, a trio inspired by, amongst other things, the style of the Brazilian martial art of capoeira that sees Maliphant perform alongside the award-winning dancer Thomasin Gülgeç and Dickson Mbi. Still Current also features Still, choreographed on Dickson Mbi who recently stunned audiences with his strength an exceptional popping style in The Rodin Project, the dance film Erebus and the Lucozade Revive commercial.

Along with these three new works Still Current features the critically acclaimed Afterlight (Part One), winner of the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography. Performed by Thomasin Gülgeç, this solo showcases his fluid agility and grace. The evening also sees Carys Staton perform the modern-classic solo Two, originally created on Dana Fouras and made famous by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sylvie Guillem.

For Still Current Maliphant once again works with his long-standing collaborator, lighting designer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls. The programme includes an eclectic mix of music with compositions from Erik Satie, new music by long-time collaborators Andy Cowton and Mukul and a reworked score by Armand Amar. Costume designs are by Stevie Stewart, formerly one half of the influential design label BodyMap. Recently she has worked with Michael Clark and Rambert as well as designing costumes for Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears. Still Current also features animation created by Jan Urbanowski who created the opening credits for Danny Boyle’s 2013 film Trance.
