Jan McNulty
CLASSICAL CHOREOGRAPHY, JACK THE RIPPER, AND HIGH-SPEED ACTION COMBINE FOR AN EXHILARATING TRIPLE BILL AT THE ROYAL BALLET Serenade – George Balanchine Sweet Violets – Liam Scarlett DGV: Danse à grande vitesse – Christopher Wheeldon 14 – 26 May The ethereal choreography of George Balanchine’s atmospheric and emotionally subtle Serenade opens the Triple-Bill with a much-loved classic, as the perfect complement to Tchaikovsky’s soaring Serenade for Strings. In contrast, the seedy underworld of Victorian London provides the setting for Liam Scarlett’s Sweet Violets, in its first performance since its premiere in 2012. Scarlett, The Royal Ballet’s Artist in Residence, takes inspiration from the work of artist Walter Sickert, whose ‘Camden Town Murder’ paintings were based on the gruesome murders of Jack the Ripper. Scarlett’s classical sensibility is set against the backdrop of John MacFarlane’s dark and atmospheric sets, portraying the dangers of Victorian London with a deep emotional punch. Hurtling forward into a 21st-century aesthetic, Christopher Wheeldon’s award-winning and Olivier-nominated DGV: Danse à grande vitesse brings the programme to an exhilarating close. The ballet was inspired by the French high-speed train line TGV, and is set to a propulsive score by Michael Nyman originally commissioned to commemorate the 1993 inauguration of the TGV line. --ENDS --- NOTES TO EDITORS: SERENADE – George Balanchine SWEET VIOLETS – Liam Scarlett DGV: DANSE À GRAND VITESSE – Christopher Wheeldon 14, 21, 23 May at 7.30pm / 17 May at 12 noon / 24 May at 7pm/ 26 May at 1.30pm and 7pm Serenade is set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.
