Award-winning French choreographer Olivier Dubois presents the UK premiere of Tragédie at Sadler’s Wells from 8 - 10 May 2014.

Focusing on the anatomy of the human body, Tragédie sees nine men and nine women stripped bare both literally and figuratively to explore the human condition. The dancers combine concise repetitious phrases of movement creating a hypnotic chorus where body and soul meet, building to a thrilling crescendo and evoking a tribal atmosphere.

Olivier Dubois has been at the cutting edge of the French contemporary dance scene since 1999. Following a career that has seen him perform with some of the finest dance companies in the world including Ballet Preljocaj and Sasha Waltz & Guests, Dubois makes his long awaited choreographic UK debut.

After originally studying languages, Olivier Dubois decided to become a dancer at the age of 23. Later moving into choreography, he created his first work, Under cover, in 1999. In 2005 he collaborated with artist Christine Corday to create Féroces. In 2006 he was asked to choreograph a work for the Festival d’Avignon on the subject of life. His piece, Pour Tout l’or du monde, was awarded le prix spécial du jury décerné par le Syndicat professionnel de la critique. Dubois’ work Faune(s), inspired by Nijinsky’s L’Après-midi d’un Faune, was presented at the Festival d’Avignon in July 2008. Later that year, he was awarded the Prix Jardin d'Europe.

Dubois founded the Olivier Dubois Company in 2007. The company is based in Paris and presents Dubois’ works worldwide. In addition to running his company, Olivier Dubois is an Associate Artist of CENTQUATRE, Paris, and director of le Centre Chorégraphique National de Roubaix Nord-Pas De Calais.

With Tragédie, which was created for the Festival d’Avignon in 2012, Olivier Dubois has created a dance piece that feels powerful, hypnotic and thrilling.

Sadler’s Wells’ Artistic Director and Chief Executive Alistair Spalding says: “Tragédie from Olivier Dubois is unlike any other dance performance you will see. He has managed to create the kind of atmosphere in a theatre situation only usually experienced in a club environment. Tragédie slowly builds to a climax that you think can't go any further and then it goes further!”
