Featuring an expanded company of world-class dancers and an eclectic soundtrack, Sun follows the success of his Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut. The production returns to Sadler’s Wells from Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 March 2014 as part of its 2014 UK tour.A Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Shechter is one of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists, having gained renown for his choreography and highly-charged, atmospheric music scores. Alongside performances at Sadler’s Wells, Southbank Centre and The Place, his work has been seen at the Roundhouse, National Theatre, Barbican Centre, Latitude Festival and on the opening credits of Channel 4’s Skins. This year, he has been appointed Guest Director for the Brighton Festival, where his Company will perform Sun in May. Hofesh Shechter Company has achieved worldwide recognition with previous shows Political Mother, Uprising, The Art of Not Looking Back and In Your Rooms.Sun is an epic piece of dance theatre performed by his company of 16 dancers. On the surface Sun is beautiful and entertaining but the discomfort that bubbles underneath is palpable. It’s a thought-provoking and sometimes humorous puzzle that deals with deceit, lies and fake truths. Shechter created the production with set designer Merle Hensel, lighting designer Lee Curran and costume designer Christina Cunningham. As with previous works, the powerfully-atmospheric soundtrack is by Shechter himself, with additional music from Wagner, Irving Berlin and Sigur Ros.Before arriving in the UK in 2002, Hofesh Shechter performed with Israel’s internationally acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company where he worked with choreographers such as Ohad Naharin and Wim Vandekeybus. After several years studying drumming and percussion in Israel and France, he moved to the UK, joining the Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company. He made his choreographic debut in 2004 at The Place before becoming an Associate Artist of the venue. He was appointed an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells in 2008 and the Hofesh Shechter Company is Resident Company at Brighton Dome.Over the past ten years Shechter’s work has earned him a string of awards including the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography (modern) for In Your Rooms in 2008 and the British Theatre Institute’s Award for Excellence in International Dance in 2011. Most recently Political Mother was nominated for a South Bank Sky Arts award in 2011.Currently Shechter has work in the repertoires of renowned international companies including Nederlands Dans Theater 1 and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. In 2013 he collaborated with the Metropolitan Opera, New York on Nico Mulhy's Opera, Two Boys.Following its return to Sadler’s Wells Sun opens the Brighton Festival on Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 May where Shechter serves as Guest Director for 2014.
