Scottish Ballet on the Silver Screen!

There will be a chance to catch Scottish Ballet on the silver screen next week as part of the DANCE:FILM Festival in Edinburgh.

 

Healah Dancing, a short film commissioned for Scottish Ballet’s critically acclaimed Dance Odysseys programme, as part of the Edinburgh International Festival 2013, will have its cinematic premiere before Pioneers – a feature double bill of documentaries about pioneers in dance, Peter Darrell: Scotland’s Dance Pioneer and Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance.

 

Healah Dancing is the centrepiece of a trilogy featuring Scottish Ballet Principal Dancer Erik Cavallari and Soloist Eve Mutso.  Soft, sensual movements are captured in this intimate portrait. A voyeuristic insight into the physical relationship of dance in this study in motion as two Scottish Ballet dancers connect and disconnect; bodies are drawn together, close, intense as their muscular forms ignite.  Healah Dancing is cut to a contemporary folk soundtrack from artist Keaton Henson using music from his forthcoming release Romantic Works.

 

Peter Darrell: Scotland’s Dance Pioneer (Dir: Eleanor Taylor) tells the story of Scottish Ballet’s founding Artistic Director.  Peter Darrell was already a successful and ground-breaking choreographer when he became the first artistic director of Scottish Ballet in 1969. He laid the foundations for the company's current success and created a catalogue of ballets that deserve reviving. This film explores what made Darrell's work so innovative and influential with the help of dancer/choreographer Michael Clark, whom he mentored, and Matthew Bourne, the UK's most successful contemporary choreographer whom he inspired.

Scottish Ballet’s Healah Dancing will also be screened in the Shorts Programme as part of the 42^nd Dance on Camera Festival, New York in the new year.
