Another one on MHK   MIYAKO, The Last Dance

January 18, 2020  1:10 - 2:00 / 7:10 - 8:00 / 13:10 - 14:00 / 19:10 - 20:00

Miyako Yoshida's precise and delicate performances earned critical acclaim at the Royal Ballet of England. She remained true to her Japanese sensibilities in becoming the company's first Asian female principal dancer. A year before her retirement, however, she faced injury, emergency hospitalization and separation from a loved one. The program follows Yoshida for 300 days, culminating in her memorable final appearance.

Sky:507      Virgin:625 (XL subscription)   Freesat 209

this is the link for the app   https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/app/   (I haven't tried the app so I don't know how well it works.)

This program is now available on demand so I hope you all can see and enjoy. Available until March 31, 2020

Also the whole farewell performance was broadcasted here in Japan. She was incredible given that she was 54 at her retirement, and it was so touching to see her with Irek Mukhamedov and Federico Bonneli.

Yes and her new season will open with Sir Peter Wright's Swan Lake. Here is the whole program of her season at National Ballet of Japan.

How fantastic to see the whole farewell performance.

It looks like a great season with NBJ.

Tune in from 7pm for an exclusive look into rehearsals for Creature, Akram Khan’s new ballet set to premiere 1 – 8 April at Sadler’s Wells. In this masterclass, Lead Principals Jeffrey Cirio and Erina Takahashi will be coached by repetiteur Mavin Khoo followed by a short Q&A.

More info ► https://www.ballet.org.uk/creature Subscribe for regular ENB films ► http://bit.ly/ENBSubscribe Watch more ENB films ► https://www.youtube.com/enballet

A new ballet by Akram Khan, his second full-length production for English National Ballet. Following the pivotal impact of Dust and Giselle, Akram Khan returns to English National Ballet for his third collaboration with us.

Creature is an unearthly tale of exploitation and human frontiers inspired by Georg Büchner’s expressionist classic Woyzeck, with shadows of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Drawing on themes of abandonment, isolation and the fragility of the mind, Creature is the tale of an outsider and the search for belonging.

Khan is joined by a brilliant creative team of Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip, composer and sound designer Vincenzo Lamagna, lighting designer Michael Hulls and dramaturg Ruth Little.

Hmm, seems as though the focus has shifted somewhat ...

This is the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Pretty dreadful ballet in my opinion.

See the Bolshoi's USA (United States of America) tour for this summer is cancelled.  Understandable certainly.  Wonder whether or not the NBoC's (National Ballet of Canada) presentation of Nureyev's SB (Sleeping Beauty) will now be realised at the ROH (Royal Opera House)?  Time, I suppose, will tell.

good heavens, from the pic on the company website, Miyako still looks as if she's only 18!

Doesn't she just!  I have just watched this film and was touched by the way she said she had felt 'ugly' and 'inadequate' - the opposite of how she really is!  I also thought Bonelli came over very well, as much a gentleman backstage as he is in his princely roles.  As for Mukhamedov.... well  :D

Also streaming are the Ballet Boyz Romeo and Juliet and Akram Khan's Giselle.

However they are geoblocked, but if you have the means to get around this like a VPN or you live in the relevant country, they are highly recommended.

Romeo  https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/088015-000-A/romeo-et-juliette/

Giselle  https://www.raiplay.it/video/2020/01/giselle-di-akram-khan-english-national-ballet-6cf26a42-b667-4f6b-817a-761b352f19bf.html

By the way, the Paris Opera ballet performances on their Facebook page are NOT geoblocked

It also available here

So to clarify, these performances are available on their Facebook page for 24 hours only and  then on Culturebox and the Paris Opera website for a few days.

Apologies for the confusion.

I've just watched the Paris Opera 'Swan Lake' - Nureyev version.  Any opinions?

Have seen it live and on screen a few times. The concept is that the story is Siegfried's dream which enables the mirroring  of the tutor and the Rothbart character . I prefer the white acts which have the least 'tampering'. In fact I think Act 4 is really good choreographically.  I'm not sure whether it's   the drab costuming of the other two acts which diminishes my enjoyment or the dance sequences. The two new young principals in this video are very good particularly Germain Louvet.

But without Nureyev around  to direct revivals I suspect the production has probably lost a lot of its original intention and drive and is performed rather dutifully these days. It's very dated now and I find it hard to like.  Whether the POB will ever replace any of the Nureyev productions no one knows.
