Sadler’s Wells increases UK touring in 2013/14

Audiences around the UK have an unprecedented opportunity to see some of the world’s best contemporary dance locally, as Sadler’s Wells undertakes tours of seven acclaimed works over the coming year.

The UK’s leading dance house presents shows in 27 venues around the UK - from Bournemouth to Belfast, Ipswich to Inverness - between September 2013 and summer 2014, offering more audiences from outside London the chance to see work produced by its outstanding Associate Artists and resident companies.

The first production to tour is Still Current, a new evening of solos, duets and a trio by internationally acclaimed choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant, which opened on 26 September at The Point in Eastleigh and tours until May 2014.

This is followed from 21 October by Lyrikal Fearta: The Letter & Broken Lineage, a triple bill from Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D, including his acclaimed solo The Letter, which uses choreopoetry to explore the responses to Jonzi being offered an MBE through the eyes of an animated cast of characters. The show visits 11 venues in 2013 and continues touring into 2014.

Also in October, Made at Sadler’s Wells, a showcase of Sadler’s Wells productions comprising work by three of the venue’s acclaimed Associate Artists, visits Belfast and Edinburgh. The evening includes UNDANCE by Wayne McGregor, AfterLight by Russell Maliphant, and Faun by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Cherkaoui’s most recent work, the Tango-inspired m¡longa has its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells from November 6 – 10, and is set to visit Birmingham in May 2014 as part of an international tour. Also touring internationally and visiting Birmingham is Sylvie Guillem’s 6000 Miles Away, on 6 & 7 May 2013.

International hip hop dance theatre festival Breakin’ Convention, curated by Jonzi D, tours to 10 venues in May and June 2014 with an international bill of artists that includes ILL-Abilities, Ukweli Roach and Wanted Posse. Breakin’ Convention has received support from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Programme and Dance Consortium to visit a number of locations that have low levels of participation in the arts or rarely receive touring productions.

The final show to tour in summer 2014 is a newly created work from the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC), choreographed by Guest Artistic Director Akram Khan.

This increased level of UK touring is in addition to Sadler’s Wells’ ongoing international touring programme, which includes productions of Russell Maliphant and Sylvie Guillem’s PUSH and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Sutra.

Sadler’s Wells has recently been nominated for The Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre in the TMA UK Theatre Awards. The winner is announced on 20 October 2013.

Sadler’s Wells Chief Executive and Artistic Director Alistair Spalding said “Sadler’s Wells has a growing reputation for international touring, and last year we presented 12 Sadler’s Wells Productions across 51 international cities. This is the first time we have toured so extensively here in the UK, and I think it’s very important to undertake these tours, so that we can offer some of the best work from top artists working today to the widest possible audience.”
