Jan McNulty Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I have just received an email from Phoenix Dance Theatre about the Moving "Mindbody" Conference. Here are the details: MOVING "MINDBODY" CONFERENCE Saturday 28th September, 10am - 4pm The Audrey and Stanly Theatre, Leeds Phoenix and The Harry Guntrip Psychotherapy Trust are delighted to offer a unique multi-media conference - including dance, clinical presentation, film and audience discussion - which examines the relationship of mind and body - 'mindbody'. Through live performance and interviews between psychotherapist Caroline Owens and Phoenix artists, the day will explore the ways that our 'mindbody' creates and expresses movement within ourselves and others. The conference centres on a performance of Phoenix Dance Theatre's Ki - a highly physical piece about Genghis Khan's powerful charisma and the strength of will which allowed him to lead thousands of fanatical followers - and a clinical presentation about a 13-year old boy who, as the result of a hit-and-run accident, was left quadraplegic but through using 'mindbody' was able to project his will onto others, orchestrating his life through them. This invigorating day of discussion and interaction will look at the ways in which 'mindbody' is emotional, physical, spiritual and how that energy passes through us and to others. The panels will give attendees a unique chance to hear what it takes to be a Phoenix dancer and ask those burning questions you may have about how we create our pieces! Timetable: 10.00 - 10.30 Coffee and Registration Morning Session - Ki 10.30 - midday The morning session begins with a performance of Phoenix Dance Theatre's Ki by dancer Josh Wille. Following the performance there will be a discussion panel with Josh and Phoenix's Rehearsal & Tour Director Tracy Tinker about the work, facilitated by Consultant Psychotherapist Caroline Owens and Phoenix Artistic Director Sharon Watson. There will also be a chance to ask questions and for open discussion. 12.00 - 1.30 Lunch Break - please note lunch is not provided, however the venue is just 10 minutes' walk from Leeds' busy shopping centre. Afternoon Session - 'mindbody' 1.30 - 2.45 The focus for the afternoon session is Caroline Owens' paper Moved to Tears. Following a presentation by Owens she will discuss the issues with Phoenix dancer Phil Sanger - examining the concept of 'mindbody'. 2.45 - 3.15 Afternoon Coffee Break 3.15 - 4.00 To finish the event there will be a screening of rehearsal footage of Phoenix's latest work by renowned European choreographers Ivgi & Greben. This highly physical piece is broadly based on the concept of suffering and so will provide further opportunities for discussion. Tickets: £60 full price / £30 students* *Please note these tickets will need to be collected from Box Office on the day of the event with proof of student ID. Following the conference there will be a performance in the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre of Phoenix's latest mixed programme Phoenix @ Home. Conference attenders can get a ticket for the show for just £5. To take advantage of this deal please book your ticket at the same time. Book your tickets online at www.theatreleeds.comor call the Box Office on 0113 220 8008 This is a fundraising event in aid of Phoenix Dance Theatre Ltd and The Harry Guntrip Phsychotherapy Trust 1
LinMM Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 This looks fascinating an area I am particularly interested in but having literally just got back from holiday too soon to go rushing off to Leeds this time. I will google them to see if doing anywhere else down the line.
LinMM Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Just checked looks like a one off unfortunately but see that the Company is performing at the Linbury in November.
John Mallinson Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Related, but on a different tack, is the exhibition at the Wellcome Collection entitled Thinking with the body: Mind and movement in the work of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. Just opened: on till October 27. 1
LinMM Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Thanks will definitely try to make it along to this.
