The popular body:language series of talks, chaired by dramaturg and writer Guy Cools, returns to Sadler’s Wells for a fifth season this autumn, featuring Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Michael Hulls and Russell Maliphant, as well as acclaimed dramaturg Ruth Little and celebrated artist Antony Gormley.

The talks, in which artists are interviewed about the role of the body in their work, take place at Sadler’s Wells’ Lilian Baylis Studio. Each discussion focuses not just on dance and live performance but also encompasses how other disciplines relate to the human form, including philosophy, science, medicine, anthropology and other arts.

Monday 30 September 2013 – Michael Hulls & Russell Maliphant: Body Light

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists, choreographer Russell Maliphant and lighting designer Michael Hulls, have been collaborating for 20 years, creating a unique and distinctive artistic signature in which the dancers interact with the light that enwraps them. This talk will discuss why light is such an elemental factor in creating a performance environment for dance, and how light technology and the body interact in different ways.

Monday 18 November 2013 – Ruth Little: Body Dramaturgy

Dance dramaturgy is a young research field, both in academics and as it relates to the world of dance, resulting in myths and widespread misunderstanding about the subject. This interview between Guy Cools and Ruth Little, who have both collaborated with Akram Khan at different stages of his career, is a unique opportunity to understand the powers and limits of body dramaturgy.

Monday 9 December 2013 – Anthony Gormley: Body Sculpture

Few people within the contemporary art scene have been so influential - both in their work and its accompanying discourse - as Antony Gormley. As an artist who is passionate about dance, Gormley has put his own creativity to the service of choreographers such as Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Hofesh Shechter.

  • In January 2013, the first two seasons of body:language talks were published by Sadler’s Wells in collaboration with the institute Arts in Society of the Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts, Netherlands. They can be ordered online at www.sadlerswells.com
