Acclaimed British choreographer Wayne McGregor’s dynamic style and ground-breaking collaborative approach across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science has seen him create an exceptional body of work over the past 20 years. A Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, his latest work Atomos receives its world premiere at Sadler’s Wells from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 October 2013.

 

Atomos is a new full-length work inspired by the structure and form of the atom, and continues McGregor’s ongoing exploration of scientific ideas and principles. The production features a cast of ten dancers, set against a backdrop devised by a collective of hand-picked artists including longtime collaborators, lighting designer Lucy Carter and filmmaker Ravi Deepres. Neo-classical ambient composers A Winged Victory For The Sullen provide a newly composed score which will be performed live, and costumes are designed by cutting edge design house Studio XO, whose work includes groundbreaking wearable technologies and “digital skins”.

 

Wayne McGregor | Random Dance has been a Resident Company of Sadler’s Wells since 2001. The company was established by McGregor in 1992 when he was 22 years old and during its 20 year existence it has been the recipient of numerous awards including the South Bank Show Award for Dance, The International Theatre Institute’s Award for Excellence in International Dance, The Movimentos Award and the Critics Circle Award, the company was established by McGregor in 1992 when he was 22 years old.

 

Wayne McGregor CBE is a multi award-winning British choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, renowned for his physically testing choreography and highly innovative collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science. In addition to his role as Artistic Director of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, he is also Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet (appointed 2006).

McGregor has created new works for Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, New York City Ballet, Australian Ballet, English National Ballet, NDT1 and Rambert Dance Company among others. His works are also in the repertories of the leading ballet companies in the world including the Bolshoi, Royal Danish Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Boston Ballet and Joffrey Ballet. He has directed movement for theatre and film including Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire, and has choreographed music videos including the Grammy-nominated Lotus Flower video for Radiohead, and Ingenue for Atoms for Peace. Most recently he premiered Borderlands for San Francisco Ballet and Raven Girl for The Royal Ballet

 

An exhibition, Thinking with the Body: Mind and movement in the work of Wayne McGregor l Random Dance will also run between 19 September to 27 October at Wellcome Collection. Featuring video, photography, multimedia installation, commissioned film and art works, the exhibition explores a series of collaborations between cognitive and social scientists and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, and offers an immersive encounter with their shared enquiry into choreographic thinking and the creative process, including the making of Atomos.
