Inspired by his ensemble dancers; Thomasin Gülgeç, Dickson Mbi, Carys Staton, Maliphant once again works in collaboration with his long-standing collaborator, lighting designer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls. Still Current also sees Russell Maliphant return to the UK stage, in a role he shares with guest dancer Adam Kirkham from the BalletBoyz.The evening presents a diverse physical language that integrates qualities and vocabulary from ballet, contemporary dance and martial arts that celebrates the technical strength of Maliphant’s world class company.The evening’s performance includes three new works including a duet created for Carys Staton, drawing on her strength and versatility as a dancer. Staton is paired with Russell Maliphant who shares the role with Adam Kirkham. Still Current also features a new solo choreographed on Dickson Mbi who recently stunned audiences with his strength and exceptional popping style in The Rodin Project, the dance film Erebus and the Lucozade Revive commercial. Using contemporary dance, ballet and other styles including popping, along with Maliphant’s choreographic language of flow, form and dynamics this new solo showcases Mbi’s virtuosic language and performance character. Still Current also features a new work for three male dancers drawing on, amongst other things, the styles of Brazilian martial art of capoeira.Along with these three new works Still Current features the critically acclaimed Afterlight (Part One), winner of the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography. Performed by Thomasin Gülgeç, this solo showcases his fluid agility and grace. He is joined by Carys Staton whose energetic elegance and delicate strength are showcased in the new creations and in her performance of the modern-classic solo Two.Still Current includes an eclectic mix of music with compositions from Éric Satie and long time collaborator Andy Cowton and a newly commissioned score by Armand Amar, well known for his film scores. Costume designs are by Stevie Stewart, formerly one half of the influential design label BodyMap, recently she has worked with Michael Clark and Rambert as well as designing costumes for Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears, and animation by Jan Urbanowski who created the opening credits for Danny Boyle’s 2013 film Trance.“A genuinely innovative choreographer” Daily TelegraphRussell Maliphant: Still Current is a Sadler’s Wells/Russell Maliphant production, co-commissioned by Dance East, supported by artsdepot.
