The Many Faces of Robert Helpmann

 

White Lodge Ballet Museum and Resource Centre is hosting a one-day symposium, The Many Faces of Robert Helpmann, at the Royal Ballet Upper School, on Sunday 27th October.

 

In 1933, Robert Helpmann, an aspiring theatrical performer, left his native Australia for London, where he was introduced to Ninette de Valois, the Founding Director of the Royal Ballet.  She immediately remarked:  "Something could be done with that face".

 

The symposium will focus on the multiple ways in which the man behind "that face" became such a prominent figure in the emerging British ballet and national theatres around the period of the Second World War.  It will also consider his distinctive work in films and television, and his present legacy;  particularly to The Royal Ballet in England, but also ballet in Australia.  The full day of presentations will include illustrated talks, live performance, film screenings and guided panel discussions.
