Full UK tour details: www.danceconsortium.com “A uniformly fabulous group of dancers” The Guardian “Cedar Lake is possibly the country’s most innovative contemporary ballet troupe” The New York Times Founded in 2003, New York’s Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet has forged a strong reputation over the past decade for the exceptional calibre of its dancers and for commissioning new work from the world’s most sought after choreographers. Following its critically acclaimed UK debut at Sadler’s Wells in 2012, the company is returning to the UK for its first national British tour, which will visit five venues across the country from 27 September – 19, October, presented by Dance Consortium, full details below. The company is presenting a characteristically innovative triple bill of works including two UK premieres. Indigo Rose, created by acclaimed Czech choreographer JiÅí Kylián opens the programme with a virtuosic showcase for the company’s talented ensemble. The work is a fast-paced and frenetic assemblage of duets, trios and quartets. Spiked with moments of humor, the dance is set against a driving score featuring works by the Baroque masters Bach and Couperin juxtaposed with 20th century American composer John Cage’s prepared piano works. This is followed by the UK premiere of Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue, commissioned by Cedar Lake from Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite, who displays her deeply evocative and compelling aesthetic. Of the work, Crystal Pite said, “I love the word ‘rescue’. It captures a whole story in a single word. Similarly, the body can convey narrative through the simplest of actions. For me, this work for Cedar Lake was an act of excavation. After creating the choreography, I searched within it for images that specifically evoked rescue. I tried to liberate and expose these images for brief contemplation before releasing them back into the dance: saving and holding one picture of rescue in each of the ten duets.” The bill is completed by Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren's spirited ensemble piece, Necessity, Again, the second UK premiere of the evening and another Cedar Lake commissioned work. At once playful and subconsciously sinister, the piece is an exploration of a pure expression of emotion, without need for narrative or reason, set against a selection of songs by Charles Aznavour. The production contains scenes of partial nudity.
