zxDaveM Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I'm weaning myself off social media (I left twitter as soon as musk bought it), and now in the process of leaving Facebook and Instagram, after zuckerberg took the knee to trumper Those billionaires are just going to have to do without my 0.00002p worth of business! lol 8
MAB Posted January 10 Posted January 10 You are not the only one by any means. Personally I would be reluctant to leave Facebook because of my very far flung family, still the best place for pics of my great-great nephew in Oz and my g-g nieces in the States. Local groups are brilliant for all sorts of advice and information. The power some of these guys have is getting very worrying though and Muskrat attempting to buy his way into UK politics is disgusting. 8
Fiz Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I was all set to leave Facebook and Instagram this weekend but my friends very touchingly begged me not to go. It’s one way of keeping in touch with my very busy nieces any their families. However I do think Zuckerberg is revolting and Musk too. However I dumped Twitter after Trump was elected and it turned into a MAGA echo chamber. 2
Sim Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I left Twitter almost as soon as I joined it, way before Trump's first election. The nastiness depressed me no end, and it has only got worse over the years. A real shame about Zuck and the others, but I will also stay put as I have many friends around the world who I grew up with and it's the easiest way of staying in touch. 4
zxDaveM Posted January 10 Author Posted January 10 I'm finding Bluesky a much more pleasant and interesting environment, so do my aimless, time-killing scrolling on there 🙂 5
alison Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Interestingly, I've just had an invitation from 38Degrees to sign an open letter asking Musk to butt out of UK politics ... 7
alison Posted January 10 Posted January 10 PS: Was never on social media in the first place (apart from initially signing up with Facebook because I thought it was needed to access the ROH account), so I won't be missing anything. Watching Channel 4's "Fake grooming scandal" (serendipitously timed!) this week has only reinforced that decision: how everything exploded and many people's lives were damaged as a result was quite shocking to watch. 4

I watched this too and it struck me as odd that I hadn't heard about it before, unlike the torrent of publicity about the real (and even more shocking) grooming scandals. What does this say about our media that such an awful episode passed without much comment. Or did I simply sleep through the whole thing and the world and his wife were talking about it at the time? 2

zxDaveM Posted January 10 Author Posted January 10 worth noting - you have to make an effort to go out and find the streams you're interested in (which is good, as you don't get bombarded with dross and adverts - at the moment!) Don't know if this a new year thing, but I have become heartily disillusioned with much of the Internet of late (this site excepted of course! 🙂 ) Meta is heading down the twitter route, to the 'X'-it (is there a decent soul left on X?) Spotify et al, make the old record companies look like saints (I personally think Spotify is evil incarnate, so buy CDs) Amazon wipes out opposition making it hard to go elsewhere - I try to only use it now as a price guide, and shop on companies home website Uber cabs, and food/parcel delivery companies - brilliant technology, but treat staff appallingly tik-tok - sucking the life/wellbeing out of anyone under 25 TV streaming companies - all have 2-4 really good things on, then hundreds/thousands of pure dross. To see all the good ones would cost a mint (I sometimes take out a month, or a free trial, and binge the things I want to see, then cancel - of course, the free trial always seems to run out halfway through a series, or just before something REALLY good starts, as they now do what old telly did, and drop a new episode weekly) YouTube seems to be gobbling up a lot (including sports) - but a word of warning to companies advertising on it; if your advert interrupts a song/film clip I'm enjoying halfway through, your company goes on the blacklist) Google's tracking does my head in (so I use DuckDuckGo to search) - as does their intrusive ads in gmail Well, you get the gist 2
alison Posted January 10 Posted January 10 ENB, at least, is still on Twitter, as we know ... But yes, I do rather agree with you, Dave.

I didn't get any of it when Ellie Williams started posting her lies on Facebook in May 2020 probably because we were more concerned about the safety and wellbeing of the people we knew and in our community from Covid-19, which at the time was still not fully understood and a vaccine wasn't available to everyone yet. Also, although I read the national news and local news in the south, I suspect a lot of the newspapers' websites and the local BBC didn't want to give her the oxygen of publicity as there were lots of question marks surrounding the believability of the case. She hasn't just ruined the lives of the people in Barrow she accused falsely, she's harmed their loved ones and caused damage to their homes and cars as well, and also made it harder for real victims in future to be taken seriously. 1
Fiz Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Honestly, @Emeralds, I worry she will start all over again if she’s moved and possibly changed her name. She’d already previously accused her psychiatrist of assault of some kind. I doubt she would have had or wanted access to psychiatric care in prison.

If they're counting the time she was in remand, wouldn't that still mean she doesn't get out till 2029? She put policeman's lives at risk by inciting riots, those she falsely accused were decent hardworking people who were hounded so much that they attempted suicide. She should have been locked up for longer. Surely she wasn't let out early. Tommy Robinson and the other instigators of riots should be jailed as well. 1

She was released a couple of weeks ago to ease prison overcrowding!
Sabine0308 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I left Twitter as soon as Musk took over. Leaving FB would cost me to loose connection too many friends mainly in the US and all devastated bc of trump. BTW Musk tries to influence the upcoming elections in Germany as well, he supports the far right! 🤬 1
Candleque Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Writers were some of the first migrating to Bluesky 🦋 https://bsky.app/profile/gramilano.com https://bsky.app/profile/bachtrack.com https://bsky.app/profile/judithmackrell.bsky.social Haven't seen many dancers there atm, but as a group they were never big on Twitter either. They love their Instagram 🤳 3 2

And even then, wasn't getting all of their posts (except the adverts). So parting ways won't be TOO difficult, I don't think

Emeralds Posted January 10 Posted January 10 2 hours ago, Fiz said: Oh no, my dear! She was released a couple of weeks ago to ease prison overcrowding! That's horrible, isn't it Fiz.....when one hears of so many cases of people whose initial sentences of one year or less have been stretched to 15 or more years because of technicalities, that's just hideous. She's a crafty and dangerous sociopath. 2

PS I'm a bit disappointed that ENB only post their casting updates on Twitter though. Either post on all social media platforms or not at all. Actually, would be nicer if they just emailed people who have booked a ticket on the relevant dates. 2 1

In terms of ENB's casting updates, what I think would be useful would be if they marked cast changes on their website & on cast sheets. Sometimes I have to search back for original cast announcements on here if I'm not sure if there's been cast changes or not, as they don't all get announced on Twitter. 2
alison Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I don't think it's possible for them to email individual bookers, Emeralds, because it will be the individual theatres which hold the booking details. 1

Oh yes, good point, Alison. So all platforms would be more useful to audience members. I'd like to see more dance companies sign up with BlueSky; I know some arts organisations have (can't remember who). 2
