This wonderful, groundbreaking dancer and lady has died at the age of 81. She was Alvin Ailey’s muse and many roles were created on her.

RIP Ms Jamison.

Very sad news- found out late last night. I used to stand in ballet school lessons below a photograph of her (a studio shot) dancing the lead role in Cry, that iconic ballet made for her by Alvin Ailey, and her expression and poise spoke volumes. I'd try to incorporate that in my dancing. She directed the Ailey company after his passing so well too. Rest in peace, Judith Jamison.

I recommend reading her autobiography Dancing Spirit where she tells of the prejudice against little black girls wanting to dance, both heart breaking and rage inducing.  She was quite simply the finest female modern dancer I ever saw and perhaps her performance in Ailey's Cry was the greatest solo I've seen in any genre.  A true Deesse de la Danse.
