alison Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 I've just realised that I came home without picking up a newspaper today (I blame Waitrose for withdrawing the free newspaper offer and thus disconcerting me entirely!), so will need to get a Sunday one instead or Certain People will get very annoyed I never usually buy the Sunday papers, so have no idea what they're like. Can anyone give me an idea of what the general content of the Sunday broadsheets is like, please, so I can make some sort of decision without having to flip through each of them in the shop? Priorities are: - TV and radio guide - puzzles (!) - otherwise I shall doubtless be sent out to buy a puzzle book as well but apart from that, arts coverage would be good, decent sports coverage and, unfortunately, politics Not worried about travel. Money would be good, too. Do any of them have specific supplements on a Sunday? I remember that at least one paper had "frontloaded" most of the good stuff onto the Saturday paper instead, so don't want to buy the Sunday version and find I'm really missing out. Many thanks! 1
Pas de Quatre Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 We get the Sunday Times, has the main news section and various sections including Culture which has TV listings and dance reviews. 1
Sim Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 My preference is also the Sunday Times. It has a good general knowledge crossword as well as other puzzles. It also covers sports, finance and politics, each with their own section. 1
Emeralds Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) The arts reviews used to be interesting as they often had more time and space to cover more. The Sunday papers start getting sold on Saturday night (which I used to find incongruous but in the age of social media it is now commonplace!) so one would not find news that happened on Saturday night at 11pm for example - which would be "well established news" by 8am the next day- being included at all. The Sunday papers do sometimes break long stories in detail that they didn't have space for on a weekday and with many readers reading it slowly over breakfast/brunch and a leisurely Sunday morning, is a good way to cover an important topic with the detail and careful analysis it requires. You just have to remember that the Sunday papers will be the least up to date of all the newspapers out of all the papers in the week. Edited November 10, 2024 by Emeralds
Pas de Quatre Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) When we lived in London many years ago we would pick up the Sunday papers on the way home after a Saturday night out. This would be the first edition and there would be more updated editions through the night. Those were the days when giant print runs took place in London. Now it is digitally set, I don't know if physical printing all happens in one place or around the regions. As we have a subscription to The Times, we also have the online version of which is updated regularly so you will see articles in the late afternoon that will appear in print the following day. alison Posted November 10, 2024 Author Posted November 10, 2024 Thanks, everyone. In the end, the Sunday Times was such a physical mess (tabloid, broadsheet and magazines) that I couldn't be sure it had a radio guide for the week, so I bought The Observer (which does have what looks like a big article on the 30th anniversary of the Matthew Bourne Swan Lake, but that's by the by), where I could see that it did. If there are no puzzles, Certain People will have to go and find themselves a puzzle mag! 1
taxi4ballet Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 We sometimes get the i weekend paper. Has a good tv guide and loads of puzzles as well. The news side is relatively balanced and doesn't seem to lean one way or the other. 2

It's not really for "new" news. Apologies to all readers of this thread for my device being temperamental this weekend, repeating phrases nonsensically and autocorrecting words I didn't want corrected!
