Ian Macmillan Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 (edited) The Today programme on BBC Radio 4 was well through what may have been the same interview when my Radio Alarm came on at 7.45 am. Edited October 1, 2024 by Ian Macmillan
oncnp Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 HARDtalk - Steven McRae, Principal Dancer at The Royal Ballet - BBC iPlayer 1 5

Surely not half an hour of it, on Today? I must admit that my immediate reaction was: what's happened to his accent?!

I didn't quite understand why they covered this anyway. Is there a BBC programme coming up about him/dance injuries?
art_enthusiast Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 I think iPlayer will be showing the resilient man movie in January 1 1
Blossom Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 A sign of true love - my husband saw this start as he was watching BBC News and recorded it for me. He then promptly changed the channel…. 2
Emeralds Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 (edited) I didn't notice anything different with McRae's accent other than he seems to be more careful about speaking slightly more slowly and clearly than if he were chatting during an Insight Evening. His accent usually sounds pretty much like that. Maybe it's because the programme goes out to a global audience with the BBC News channel in their subscription package. I have friends abroad who watch the BBC News channel and HardTalk more regularly than I do! Edited October 1, 2024 by Emeralds
art_enthusiast Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 I guess, do you mean he's completely lost any Australian accent he used to have? Because listening to him in interviews from the last few years I would not have guessed he was Australian if I didn't already know! I remember watching a documentary (I think it was the one about him and Alexander Campbell) which had some clips of him as a teen and his Australian accent was a lot stronger then. But definitely not surprising as he has lived in the UK for most of his life now
alison Posted October 1, 2024 Author Posted October 1, 2024 Oh, right, obviously I haven't heard him speak that much recently - or if I have, I'd totally missed the vanishing Aussie accent.
