Jan McNulty Posted October 11, 2022 Author Posted October 11, 2022 Press Release: Tuesday 11 October 2022 Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Jules Cunningham collaborates with Spice Girl Melanie C and Harry Alexander on World Premiere Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Jules Cunningham premieres their latest Sadler’s Wells commission in collaboration with and starring Spice Girl Melanie C and award-winning dancer Harry Alexander. how did we get here? opens Sadler’s Wells’ spring 2023 season from Thursday 19 - Sunday 29 January 2023. Tickets go on sale for the new season on Monday 24 October. The work explores the unique physicality that these three performers bring to the creative process, stripping back familiarity and habit to reveal what’s written and held in the body through its rich movement history. Cunningham became a Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate in 2018 having worked extensively with Merce Cunningham in New York and Michael Clark in the UK. Melanie Chisholm, a fellow Liverpudlian, has been a source of inspiration and fascination for Cunningham over many years. Cunningham said: “As a young dancer from the north west, witnessing the Spice Girls explosion when I was 16 was pivotal. Particularly in Melanie C, I saw possibilities and ways of being myself that were outside of what was expected. Many years later, after all the experiences I've had, it's a real pleasure to be in the process of creation with Melanie and my long-time collaborator Harry Alexander. Together we are working through our shared dance histories and differences to explore what this moment of being together is.” Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director and Chief Executive Sir Alistair Spalding CBE introduced Cunningham and Chisholm through his music world contacts. They began creating how did we get here? in summer 2022, collaborating with award-winning dancer Harry Alexander. Set in the round with some seating on stage, the trio will present an intimate evening of dance. Sir Alistair Spalding CBE said: “Sadler’s Wells has a track record of bringing artists from different disciplines and backgrounds together to create fresh approaches to the making of dance. What comes out of this coming together of artists is a particularly exciting prospect, as Jules and Melanie come together at this point in both of their lives and careers.” Melanie Chisholm said: “As a classically trained dancer, it’s a dream come true for me to perform at Sadler’s Wells and even more so on an adventurous and groundbreaking project like this. My mind is blown when I think about starting my career with the Spice Girls, in the crazy glare of popular culture and then 25 years later I’m coming to perform with artists of the calibre of Jules, on the stage at Sadler’s Wells. It’s a full circle cultural moment for me and I’m pinching myself!" Harry Alexander said: “In the studio together, Jules, Melanie and I have discovering ways of working that feel unique to the three of us. Despite the differences in our bodies, there’s an easy dynamic that has allowed us to find similarities and shared qualities. Dancing allows us to bring these to the surface in a way that feels natural and very familiar.” Post-show talk on Thursday 19 January. Relaxed performances on Saturday 21, Sunday 22, Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 January. Audio Described Performance on Wednesday 25 January at 7:30 pm with accompanying Touch Tour at 6:30 pm. Booking opens to members on Friday 21 October. About Jules Cunningham Artistic Director of Julie Cunningham & Company, Jules Cunningham (they/them) performed for fifteen years with Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Michael Clark Company and others, recognised for Outstanding Modern Performance by the Critics Circle National Dance Awards, 2014. As well as leading JCC, they continue to work as a performer most notably with Thick &Tight and with Berlin-based duo Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz. Jules was the inaugural Leverhulme Choreography Fellow at Rambert and was part of the dance artist/curator mentorship program through Siobhan Davies Dance. In 2018 they became a New Wave Associate of Sadler’s Wells, Associate Artist with Dance East and an associate company of Rambert. Much in demand as a teacher, they have taught extensively across the UK and Europe. About Melanie Chisholm The start of Melanie’s career really needs no explanation at all, as it is rather well documented... After the iconic 1996 debut single ‘Wannabe’ topped the charts in 37 countries, Spice Girls’ debut album ’Spice’ went on to sell more than 31 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album of all time by a female group. The girls went on to sell more than 85 million records, releasing three studio albums, 13 singles and winning a host of awards including a BRIT for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Melanie’s first solo venture was her featuring on the hit single ‘When You’re Gone’ with Bryan Adams. As a solo artist, Melanie has achieved over 3 million album sales, two Number 1 singles and six Top 10 singles, including the iconic hits ‘I Turn To You’ and ‘Never be the Same Again’ featuring the late Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopez. In 2005 her track ‘First Day Of My Life’ was to become one of her biggest hits to date, selling over 400,000 copies in Germany alone. It also went on to chart at Number 1 in Spain, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, and Portugal where it helped to propel the album ‘Beautiful Intentions’ to double-platinum status and kept it at Number 1 for 9 weeks. In 2012, Melanie reunited with the Spice Girls for what she described as the highlight of their career as a group – performing at the Olympic Closing Ceremony in London. In one of the most anticipated appearances and in front of a global TV audience of billions, the world could never look at black cabs in the same way again! 2019 Saw the return of the Spice Girls on their sold-out Stadium tour, which served as a joyous reminder of the spell that ‘90s girl power still casts on pop. Within days of waving goodbye with three nights at Wembley, Melanie was continent-hopping on a very different, if no less glamorous tour, performing at Pride parades with the LGBTQ+ club collective Sink The Pink. From hosting a float in Sao Paulo – the first international artist ever invited to do so – and performing in New York’s Times Square for World Pride’s closing party to storming everywhere from Stockholm, Santiago, Amsterdam, London, Cologne, Berlin, Brighton, Belfast and Dublin, the tour proved pivotal to Melanie’s future plans. “Being a Spice Girl again was like a fairytale and I loved every moment,” says Melanie, “but being on that float in Sao Paolo, with three million people out in the streets, was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. It was one of those highs you hope never to come down from.” Melanie’s self-titled album was released on October 2nd, 2020, reaching #8 in the UK album charts, her best position for 17 years. In September 2022 Melanie became a Sunday Times best-selling author, with the release of her highly anticipated autobiography, "Who I Am". About Harry Alexander Harry Alexander trained at Bird College. He has been a member of Michael Clark Company since 2010, and became a member of Julie Cunningham & Company in 2016.
