According to Jeffrey and Boston Ballet’s Instagram accounts he’s to rejoin the company in the 22/23 season, he’ll also be guesting for two productions in the coming months.

While this is great new for him to return to his first company, selfishly I feel sad as he was a serious shining light in London.

I also fear this may be the start of an exodus from ENB of their really talented dancers!

Would they leave en masse before knowing who the new Artistic Director is though 🤔

Or perhaps they do have an inkling……….

Sad to see Cirio going as only just getting to know his talents but maybe it’s a convenient time to return to Boston for him. At least he knows what’s on the table there.
Here’s hoping there’s not a mass exodus though.

Very sorry that Jeffrey is leaving. Best wishes to him and Anjuli Hudson in their future careers - which will doubtless open up choreographic opportunities and other projects for them both ( and a return to their home country).

Personally I think Jeffrey’s move has nothing to do with change of AD at ENB.

He has his own connections at Boston Ballet, and from what I see, is master of his own destiny much more so than many dancers.  I’m sure he’s got his own motivations for this move after 5/6 super years with ENB.  He’s been lucky to have had 2 recent creations on him … Creature and Abdul Rahman in Raymonda.

We’ve been lucky to see him.

I will be very sad to see him leave and have really enjoyed watching him perform over the past few years.

Nobody likes the uncertainty that change brings, I am trying to be hopeful that a new AD might also attract some new stars to the company!!

Oh dear.  I always tried to book for his performances, and am very glad I got to see him quite often.  Best of luck to him and Anjuli in the future...he will be missed.

I think you are right. Going to another company does not happen overnight and would take negotiations.

Incidentally, I went to Chicago to see Creature and there were a number of Boston fans in the audience, including the Director. The work was extremely well-received by the audience. I saw two shows, both with Cirio. I was glad to see it twice, as there were things I missed the first time around. Saturday night, Cirio gave an unbelievable and spellbinding performance (maybe his last of Creature?) with Oliviera as Marie. She was stunning as well, and perhaps made more of the role.

It is interesting to note the difference in reviews between London and Chicago. While reviewers in Chicago agree that the material is dystopian and depressing, they seemed to embrace the work.

Due to the pandemic I did not get to see Creature but like you I noticed the difference in response with Hedy Weiss' review which I published in Links this morning.  (Sadly many American sites still do not allow access for European readers due to GDPR.)

The one thing all the reviews from the UK and this one this morning have agreed is that Jeffrey Cirio is quite remarkable in the role.

I wish I had been able to see more of him during his time with ENB but I send him my very best wishes for the future.

as usual … I was out of step with UK critics and thought the show in London was terrific (in all senses).  I saw 2 casts and agree with you that Jeffrey Cirio and Fernanda Oliviera gave superb emotional performances.   I actually preferred Isaac Hernandez’s Creature as he was more of a ‘human being treated as a creature’ whereas Jeffrey for me was entirely creature. Mesmerising and different.

The question the production poses of who are the creatures and who are the humans is powerful and disturbing.

I’d think the show had a different resonance this week when humans have shown again their capacity to be inhumane.

I agree Cirio was terrific in the role no doubt about that!
I wonder if I would have appreciated this ballet more if I had been a lot younger though. As I remember seeing many “depressing” type plays in my 20’s and 30’s and would be awake all night worrying about the issues raised afterwards!!
However I hope I haven’t given up on humanity just yet  …I don’t think so as surprisingly I can still feel hope… but when you see world events opening doors and then closing them again too many times and certain patterns being repeated over and over again I think when you are nearer the end of your alotted span you don’t want to get dragged down too depressing a road where there seems no hope.
A little bit of light at the end of the tunnel is very welcome!!
