Sadler’s Wells Heralds Summer Flamenco & Fairy Tale Christmas

Flamenco Festival makes a welcome return to Sadler’s Wells Theatre (21 June - 2 July), for the first time since 2019, and with more performances than ever - including seven UK premieres. The festival features nine performances from some of the world’s most respected flamenco artists, including María Pagés, Manuel Liñan, Ana Morales and Jesús Carmona.

Three celebrated UK-based ballet companies visit Sadler’s Wells: Northern Ballet’s Casanova returns (10 - 14 May); Scottish Ballet presents The Crucible (14 - 18 June); and Birmingham Royal Ballet presents a new production of Don Quixote by the company’s artistic director, Carlos Acosta (6 - 9 July).

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (affectionately known as The Trocks) pirouette back to Peacock Theatre from 6 - 17 September. For almost 50 years, the all-male comedy ballet company has been delighting audiences of all ages at sell-out performances, with their fabulous sense of fun and their flawless dance.

UK Premieres announced today for Sadler’s Wells Theatre include Belgian choreographer Jan Martens’ Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones (24 & 25 May); Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sharon Eyal’s Love Chapter 3, the final instalment of the Love Cycle trilogy (27 & 28 May); and American choreographer Kyle Abraham with a new work exploring death, folklore and reincarnation through a reimagining of Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, created with pioneering producer, composer, and electronic dance music (EDM) artist Jlin (31 May & 1 June).

Sadler’s Wells’ Elixir Festival celebrates lifelong creativity and the contribution of older artists, with a programme including work by Sadler’s Wells’ Company of Elders, in the Lilian Baylis Studio from 16 - 18 June.

And at Christmas, Sadler’s Wells is delighted to welcome back Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty at Sadler’s Wells Theatre (29 November - 15 January) and The Snowman (19 November - 31 December) at Peacock Theatre.

LISTINGS

Matthias Sperling                     LILIAN BAYLIS STUDIO
No-How Generator
Thursday 21 & Friday 22 April

Tickets: £17

Matthias Sperling’s newest work No-How Generator makes its London premiere. Performed by Matthias Sperling and Katye Coe, joined by a different guest performer each time.

No-How Generator invites audiences to experience a ritual-like performance that connects scientific perspectives on embodied cognition with more magical ways of knowing, such as divination, alchemy, shamanism or hypnosis. With both seriousness and gently subversive humour, the work reflects on a dance performance’s potential to serve as a collective experience where particular forms of knowing are conjured into being – for performers and audience members alike.

No-How Generator has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Midlands4Cities, Dance4, Siobhan Davies Dance and Sadler’s Wells.

La Veronal
Pasionaria
Tuesday 3 & Wednesday 4 May
Tickets: £20 - £25

Marcos Morau’s company La Veronal returns to Sadler’s Wells with Pasionaria, after his thought-provoking debut in 2015, Voronia.

Through the troupe’s multi-disciplinary approach, Pasionaria questions the notion of emotional detachment in an artificial world depriving its inhabitants of their individualism, morals and passion.

Haze effects.

This event is part of Spotlight on Catalan Culture in the UK, an arts and culture festival taking place from March to June 2022 organised by the Institut Ramon Llull

Northern Ballet
Casanova
Tuesday 10 - Saturday 14 May
Tickets: £15 - £65

Consumed by his desires, Casanova lived every minute in a whirlwind of scandal and decadence. But behind the mask, there was more to the man. Delve inside the heart and mind of one of the most notorious figures in history.

Following a sell-out run in 2017, Northern Ballet brings Casanova back to the Sadler's Wells stage this spring. Set in the decadent 18th century with costumes and sets designed by Christopher Oram (Frozen, Broadway and West End) and Kerry Muzzey’s cinematic score played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Rambert
Dance
Wednesday 18 - Saturday 21 May
Tickets: £15 - £55

Crafting a thought-provoking evening, Rambert presents three different short pieces that connect directly with the audience.

Eye Candy, originally created for Rambert's livestream 2021 season by Dutch siblings Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal, shows the pains and pleasures of inhabiting the human body.

In a new creation for Rambert, Ben Duke combines our shared creation myths with our more personal stories, beginning to look at what connects us to ourselves and to each other.

The evening closes with a treat by Alonzo King, danced for the first time by a UK company. Human beings have one thing in common - we want a happiness that is ever fulfilling and never goes stale. King's Following the Subtle Current Upstream is about how to return to joy.

Eye Candy is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Rambert Commissioning Council.

Eye Candy features the dancers wearing silicone body suits that give an exaggerated nude appearance. There are some slight sexual references and use of the F word twice.
