MT Degree Choices with strong ballet focus

Andante

Recommended Posts

Appreciate any advice regarding MT Degree courses strong in ballet starting this September.  DD currently on foundation at "one of the names" and also considering other options.  If any members can share any experiences or recommendations would be grateful.  A course very strong on dance performance, especially ballet, but does not wish to apply for ballet only as strong singer and enjoys other genres of dance.

Also perhaps details on easier establishments to gain entry if there is such a thing!  Reason on asking this question:  finds the whole audition process stressful!

Sincerely appreciate any feedback and insights.

Gowiththeflow is correct, the UCAS deadline has passed for this year.

I would say that Bird, Northern Ballet & LSC would fit the strong in ballet criteria.

Shockout in Manchester possibly a bit easier to get in, they take in dancers who are more commercial and they are not as well known. but they have excellent, high level ballet teachers.

I would take a look at Northern Ballet School in Manchester.  It can be the best of both worlds for someone who wants a strong ballet focus, but with other genres to keep a broad range of dance styles in their repertoire.

I don't know if it is still true, but back then it was a single audition and you were told after about a week whether you were offered a place.

A decision on funding came through later in the year, but there was no second audition for funding.

There are many others on the forum with more recent experience of NBS.

The UCAS deadline has just passed this week. We have been to several audition support days & open days in the lead up to making our choices and from doing the rounds I would say Wilkes, Performers, Urdang, Bird and the diploma at Laines do the most dance. They all understand the importance of ballet but it depends how much ballet your DD would really like to do. Mine adores ballet but wants to be doing all three disciplines (dancing/singing/acting) equally as she believes that will give her more rounded training and improve her prospects for work. I think with the MT courses you will struggle to find one that is heavily ballet based as the courses are quite determined by what is required by the industry the young performers want to work in.

Unless I’m very much mistaken I think the UCAS deadline for applications (for this Sept entry) has just passed…..
i know Laine is often regarded as having a strong ballet focus, within their MT diploma , I can’t offer advice on anywhere else though, I’m afraid

The UCAS deadline has passed, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t still apply. It just means that institutions are not required to consider on equal standing with the ones that applied before the deadline if they don’t wish to. Good luck!

Morning All

Thanks very much for your very invaluable feed back and sound advice.  Thanks also Janet for your welcome.

I forgot to mention DD has already applied via UCAS and we have audition dates set already, this is our second time of UCAS!  We are trying to secure the correct fit for DD as things are not always as they appear, if that makes sense!  I sometimes find that the gloss sometimes overrides the reality hence asking the more experienced members on this wonderful forum for feedback that we can take into account.

Have not applied to Laines yet, closes end of February and its certainly worth considering as aware strong ballet focus and thanks for reminder. Have not heard of Shock Out, Manchester and will take a look.

Any other suggestions/info would be very gratefully received.

Best Wishes

LSC students all study ballet irrespective of their specialist pathway. All students are assessed in first week as to which level they should be in for all genres. Only ballet pathway has designated en pointe classes but there is also a pointe class option that other students can select.

They have a very good MT section and their alumni are all over the West End.

Theirs is a private degree though so fees are more than some colleges. However, they have links to very reasonable accommodation with a food plan so can still be cheaper than some central London colleges.

Thank you Mummy Twinkle Toes LSC sounds very interesting and may fit the bill!   Looking at their courses in more depth now.  Just wondering if you choose a particular pathway eg ballet do students undertake their pathway for the whole 3 years (BA Hons) or does specialist pathway commence in year 2 eg after a whole year of studying the other genres?  Also would there be possibility of changes if incorrect pathway was chosen.

Sincere thanks for any insight!

Hi Andante,

The BA Hons is for 18 plus and is validated by Middlesex Uni. They choose their specialism but get to do other genres.

My Dd started at 16 so on their new degree validated by Uni of Creative Arts. 2 years is the FDA and then they do a year’s BA top up. Dd chose classical ballet and has specialised from beginning.
She still does contemporary, jazz, a ballroom class and an option each term. Ballet consists of ballet, pointe, solos and repertoire. MT students would study ballet, jazz, singing, acting, tap, heels and contemporary.
