Northern Ballet announces autumn 2022 season

Coverage Briefing

Three Short Ballets 2022 – Leeds and London

The Little Mermaid – Sheffield, Belfast, Southampton, Newcastle

The Nutcracker – Woking, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull, Leeds

Northern Ballet’s autumn 2022 tour will visit 10 cities with revivals of two family favourites, The Little Mermaid and The Nutcracker, and the première of a new evening of work Three Short Ballets 2022.

The season will open with performances of Three Short Ballets 2022 at Leeds Playhouse featuring three world premières by an international line up of choreographers: Dickson Mbi, Stina Quagebeur and Mthuthuzeli November. Three Short Ballets will also be performed at the Linbury Theatre in London in October / November.

Throughout September and October The Little Mermaid will tour to Sheffield, Belfast, Southampton and Newcastle. The Little Mermaid was David Nixon OBE's last full-length work for the Company, created in 2017, before announcing his retirement as Artistic Director in 2020. Set to a Celtic-inspired score by Sally Beamish with set design by Kimie Nakano and lighting design by Tim Mitchell, this original ballet retells the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. In Nixon's reimagining, a young mermaid falls in love with a mortal Prince and leaves her magical underwater world behind. Losing her voice and enduring immense pain, she makes the ultimate sacrifice for love.

For Christmas 2022 David Nixon's The Nutcracker will return to the stage for the first time since 2018. Always a festive favourite, Nixon's interpretation of the ballet classic is set to the famous Tchaikovsky score. The production features Regency-style sets by Charles Cusick Smith with lighting by Mark Jonathan and Nixon's own costume designs. In the midst of a family party Clara is caught up in the warmth and excitement of Christmas and becomes enthralled by her new Nutcracker doll. But, as the clock strikes midnight, her Nutcracker proves to be no ordinary toy. Clara is whisked away on the magical journey of a lifetime through a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy.

The Little Mermaid and The Nutcracker are accompanied by live music performed by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
