BREAKIN’ CONVENTION LAUNCH FIRST COMMISSION PROJECT TO SUPPORT UP TO 12 NEW UK HIP HOP DANCE THEATRE WORKS

The team behind Breakin’ Convention are excited to announce Emerge+See, a new initiative that will support the commissions of up to 12 new 15–20-minute works in hip hop dance theatre. Breakin’ Convention are calling out to hip hop dance artists across the UK who have a new idea or an existing piece that they would like to develop further for the stage.

Artists selected for commission will be paid a commission fee of up to £6,000 (depending on the size of the company) and will receive additional financial support for the production elements of the piece. Artists will be mentored throughout the project by experienced hip hop dance and theatre practitioners.

The project will run throughout 2022 and will be in four editions areas across the UK:
North East
North West
Midlands & East Anglia
South & South West

Artists are invited to apply for the edition geographically closest to them.

Artistic Director of Breakin’ Convention, Jonzi D, said: After sporadic exchanges with Open Art Surgery, this new commission programme will allow us to share our professional development projects nationwide, and provide freelance artists with much needed financial resources to create.”

The project is part of Breakin’ Out – a three-year programme of national hip hop dance theatre activity funded by Arts Council England. Breakin’ Out comprises three project strands: Grass Routes – a mentorship programme partnering with six hip hop practitioners for a year each developing local activity and supporting with organisational development; Professional Development programme – providing hip hop artists the opportunity to create and perform works; National Touring – full scale Breakin’ Convention International Festivals across the UK.

Notes to editors

PROJECT STRUCTURE

In order to be considered for commission, artists will be required to take part in an Emerge+See Surgery - a week long online professional development project.

Following the success of moving professional development projects online during lockdown, Emerge+See Surgery will use the online format in order to reach artists in each region, no matter where their location may be. Up to six artists or companies will be selected to work for a week on existing or new ideas, mentored via Zoom by two hip hop dance and theatre practitioners. At the end of the week the work will be shared live online, inviting constructive feedback from the audience.

From this, up to three of the six artists will be selected for commission.

Commission creative weeks

The commissioned artists will spend a further two weeks developing their idea into a 15-20 minute hip hop dance theatre work.

Each company will receive a commission fee of up to £6,000 (depending on company size), plus financial support for studio hire, lighting design, and music creation.

Artists will work in studio spaces local to their location and will be mentored in person during this period.

An evening of the newly commissioned works will be performed live at a theatre in that edition’s region.

Partnerships

For each edition, Breakin’ Convention is partnering with an organisation in that region. Each partner will provide rehearsal space, programme the final performance, support with marketing the project and show and support with finding local lighting designers for the final pieces.

Confirmed partner organisations so far are Dance City (North East), Swindon Dance (South/South West) and Dance4 (Midlands).
