The Shakespeare of musical theatre, as some of the tributes wrote. I just keep reading all the beautiful words about him on Twitter: how much he was loved by theatre fans worldwide, by his actors, the singers, by everyone in musical theatre. I hope he knew.

I was very sad to hear of Stephen Sondheim's passing; I had the pleasure of seeing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the NT many years ago & it was brilliant & hilarious (I've seen most of his other work too, but that's the one I especially recall). I remember once hearing an actor saying that actors loved Sondheim because he wrote so beautifully for 'actors that could sing' & not just for specialist singers & I think that sums him up nicely. As I was passing the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane tonight (saturday) they had a lovely tribute up on their electric billboard with a great photo & a touching send off. Not everyone who sees it will know him, but I bet a significant proportion of theatregoers have seen his work without realising it over the years.
