Beatriz Stix-Brunell to leave the Royal Ballet - and post-ballet news

Recommended Posts

I've never forgotten the first time I saw her, in her mid-teens, dancing with the Morphoses company at Sadler's Wells, whilst still, I think, training. Mesmerising.

The ROH information is a bit obscure: what do they mean by 'academic career'? Which discipline? As a student?  or research?  or some teaching capacity? (many dancers take degrees while performing nowadays)

Deborah Bull, another remarkably articulate dancer, has ultimately reached the heights of academia in the UK.

Sad news from the Royal Opera House. I wish Beatriz good luck in the groves of academe - I think it'll suit someone of her obvious intellect but I'm sure we'll miss her.

FIRST SOLOIST BEATRIZ STIX-BRUNELL TO LEAVE THE ROYAL BALLET

‘I found my home on this stage and will hold its memories tightly as I enter an exciting new chapter in my life. To have danced with this Company, amongst these dancers, for this audience, and in this city has been my greatest honour. I am filled with pride and gratitude.’ - Beatriz Stix-Brunell.

First Soloist Beatriz Stix-Brunell is to leave the Company after 11 years. In a move that was deferred due to the global pandemic, she leaves at the end of the Season to begin her academic career at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

After studying at the School of American Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet School and with Fabrice Herrault in New York, Beatriz entered Christopher Wheeldon’s company Morphoses at age 14. She joined The Royal Ballet as an Artist in 2010, was promoted to Soloist in 2012 and to First Soloist in 2016.  During that time her performances with The Royal Ballet have spanned the great breadth of the Company’s repertory, from the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker to the Young Girl in Frederick Ashton’s The Two Pigeons. Last year she performed the title role in Cathy Marston’s The Cellist. Her last performance will be in the Beauty Mixed Programme.

‘Beatriz has had a wonderful dance career and made an indelible contribution to the life and spirit of The Royal Ballet,’ said Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet. ‘She can be very proud of her part in shaping the Company’s recent history, working with some of the world’s leading choreographic lights including Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor and Cathy Marston. We congratulate her on her distinguished academic admission and look forward to her final performances on the Royal Opera House stage in our final mixed programme of the Season.’

We’re sure you would like to join us in wishing Beatriz well in her academic endeavours.

I’m so sad Beatriz is leaving, she was always my favourite dancer to watch. Every single role she danced was brought to life and she is such a beautiful artist. She really knows how to create a character, her Juliet was so full of depth. Does anyone know when she will be dancing before she leaves? I really want to see her dance at least once more time!

Just failed to post a link 😬
Not Beatriz but Miko Fogarty who danced with BRB for a while has announced she is about to start training as a foot and ankle surgeon so another dancer going for a great post ballet career.
I believe Miko is in California ( or was) so they may not be too far apart!

Exactly Which is why I didn’t want to renovate that thread particularly as she has just a small following here but thought it worth a mention as she left ballet to go into medical training a couple of years ago  but is now obviously specialising so continuing to be very successful. Just a little link to Beatriz’s situation.

The Statement mentions her move having been deferred owing to the pandemic - so something that's been on the boil, but perhaps not widely known?

well california colleges were not holding on site classes due to covid. i understand they will open again in the fall.

She is still quite young, isn't she?  I am surprised she didn't put her academic career on hold until she was closer to the normal retirement age for a dancer.

good heavens, she could be 40 in that case. not that that is old. but as one who finally finished my academic career at 38 i can tell you it is not easy. when one is entering the job market as a late 30-something, one is competing against people many years younger. who knows what her principal prospects were too. she is going when it the best time for her to go.

And Beatriz has also posted a 'day in my life' feature on her Instagram page.

[Apologies - couldn't find a way of copying the link!]
