Press Release: Peter Darrell - Scotland's Dance Pioneer (a documentary to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Darrell's death)

Peter Darrell Scotlands Dance Pioneer (a Taylored Production for BBC Scotland)

Tuesday 4 December

BBC Two Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm

Twenty five years on from his death, ArtWorks Scotland marks the largely unacknowledged legacy of the founder of Scottish Ballet, Peter Darrell. Darrell was a true innovator – the first choreographer to set dance to the music of The Beatles and one of the first to create a ballet specially for British television – and the man who discovered Michael Clark and inspired Matthew Bourne, who both pay tribute to him in this film.

Michael Clark – who became a child dancer in Scottish Ballet’s The Nutcracker, when he was only 11 – says: “I wouldn’t be here today, doing what I do if it wasn’t for him.”

Made by Taylored Productions, this ArtWorks features a pas de deux from Darrell’s ballet Cheri, specially restaged for the programme, and a commitment from Scottish Ballet’s new Artistic Director Christopher Hampson to look at reviving more of Darrell’s work for a modern audience.

Please note that the BBC Press Office have been in touch with Scottish Ballet to let the company know that the original tx time (9pm) of the Peter Darrell documentary on BBC Scotland next Tuesday (4th December) was incorrect, and that it will actually go out at 10pm.

This is a great documentary - hurry because later tonight it falls off of iPlayer:

Yesterday DanceTabs also put up a substantial piece by Jann Parry about Peter Darrell - if you don't know why he is important then you should read it! Besides Darrell in general and the documentary it also talks about the recent Aniversary Party held by the Darrell Trust - 25 years after he died. And to top it all there are 16 pictures included, which I think is more then we have ever used before. Hope you find it interesting:

Thank you very much for this, Bruce. Thankfully, I managed to squeeze in watching it at work, because I wouldn't have been able to watch it at home until after it dropped off due to download restrictions! It really is very worth while watching.
