Hi,

my dd has just been offered a place at the European School pf Ballet. She will start in september 2021. Advanced 1.

We would like to get some updates and information about the school since it is so new... training hours? Which Academic school to choose? Competitions? Lodging? Thanks!

Hi Paola, welcome to the forum.  I have moved your post here into “Doing Dance” which is the most appropriate place for it.

Hello Paola,

It is indeed a very new school, and all I know, because I am Dutch and have followed some press on the school, is that the school's director, Jean-Yves Esquerre, used to teach at the Dutch National Ballet School, but was made to leave from there.

Having said that, he does have a good artistic reputation. Also, one of their teachers, Igone de Jong, is a former soloist of the Dutch Natonal Ballet. Has your daughter ever considered auditioning with the Dutch National Ballet School? My DS is in Berlin, as he only wanted to go to a school with boarding facilities rather than going into a host family, but has the Dutch National Ballet on his list of companies he wishes to audition for.

My DD has done a 1 week intensive with Jean Yves-Esquerre - director at ESB.

Probably one of her favourite training experiences.

He is a straight talker.  He is funny.  He has told parents that I know - and myself - exactly what he thinks about their young dancer's prospects.

Covid has changed opportunities.  I know several young dancers who are at ESB as a place to shelter in the storm.  Keeping up their elite training and hoping to get audition opportunities soon.

Thanks Mariska,

It is always very interesting to hear what other people have heard about the school!

About auditioning it has been a very tough hear for that because of Covid, everything has been done online or just through a video, which of course does not give the entire picture of the dancers. A very unfair way. My dd has been auditioning and got 2 places offered to her. But she has chosen ESB and Amsterdam. My dd is very happy with the place offered by ESB. What we would like to hear now is direct experiences from dancers at the school... And maybe some good suggestions about the city!

Good luck to your son in Berlin!

Hi DD Driver,

Thanks for your feedback. Happy to hear your DD's description of the Director of the school. It gives me a better idea of what to expect. My DD is used to work hard so no problem with that. Very happy to hear this is what she will get! And I indeed hope we will get straight feedback about the future. Sometimes it is so difficult to endure... Do you know if the school has shut down the training at school during the autumn and winter? Are they back to in person training now?

I find it strange that the students and the school does not publish that many pictures from the school. Maybe they are not allowed to take in mobiles into the studios...

And do you know anything about the other teachers?

And about academic studies?

so grateful for all extra info we can get! Soon we will be there (september) but of course we would like to hear more from now if possible.

Thanks again DD Driver and have a great day!

Paola

Sorry, I don't know much more.

I do know an Australian girl who is leaving to join ESB for the Sept term and someone else going to another Amsterdam school.  Both seem to be going ahead with their plans.

ESB posts quite regularly on Instagram and Facebook but I'm not sure what the Covid regulations in Amsterdam are right now regarding studio v. Zoom training.
