New Polunin film

Recommended Posts

Given the discussion Polunin’s career has provoked here in the past,  might I draw attention to some reviews of his latest feature film, posted here in Links (under Friday 5th February):

The UK distributor, Curzon Home Cinema announced ‘Passion Simple’ to be the most watched movie this weekend. (I was one.)  Did Sergei’s popularity in the UK help?  Possibly!  👏👏👏👏👏

The film was awarded a  ‘Cannes selections’ prize, the highest possible given the absence of an in-person festival.
So far, the film has also been selected for the San Sebastián, Zurich and Miami Film Festivals.

Interesting dichotomy in reviews ... BBC, The Times (male reviewers may be a factor?) aren’t complimentary about the film or about Sergei’s acting.  Film specialist reviews (not influenced by past media on Sergei the dancer?) are complimentary about him and the movie, giving 4/5 star reviews.  Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian reveals his own contradictions in his review with “shame that she could not have been cast opposite a better actor, or - dare I say it? - an actual actor.”  (Which is a demeaning remark to all brilliant dancer actors.)  And then concluding with “his opaque hauteur is rather the point.”

Everyone agrees that lead actress Laetitia Dosch is something special, and that the movie is worth watching for her alone.

The novel by Annie Ernaux has huge appreciation in France, and it is a true story from her own life.  Both movie and book are the female protagonist’s story, and how it resolves.  The motivations of Sergei’s male lead role are intentionally left unknown, as the author herself did not know.

Here’s a review that more closely matches my impressions ...

⚠️ warning ... there are a lot of sex scenes and full frontal nudity of both.  Sergei was quite embarrassed by discovering how much was revealed at the first screening he saw in Spain.  There’s an hilarious interview from the San Sebastián Festival where he says that, and more! 🙈.   If I can find the link I will share it.

18 certificate

It has got 8 (I think) fully naked sex scenes, because it is a French movie about a woman having an affair with a married unattainable man.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a dance movie, and Sergei does not play a dancer.  Not sure why it’s been included in this forum really!

Mea maxima culpa!  The fault, if any, is probably mine in that I included those reviews in Links last week, suspecting that the latest doings of the 'Bad boy of ballet' might be of interest to some and, whilst it appears to be the case that he is not a dancer in this film, I think his career in dance is not yet over.

no problem to me (as everyone here knows I follow his career with interest 😉).

And for sure there is plenty of dance in his future calendar .... see schedule on poluninink.com

And I tend to link features about, eg, Baryshnikov because people are still interested in his activities.

I don’t know the answer to why.

I can tell you that Sergei met and talked to Helen Mirren (born Mironoff) at the Bravo awards (classical arts awards) in Moscow in March 2019 at the Bolshoi Theatre.  Dame Helen and John Travolta (what’s his Russian connection?) hosted the event and Sergei was a guest performer .  He danced TMTC and also presented an award to the winning and innovative concert hall, Zaryadye Hall, where he has performed a number of times.

I don’t know if they’ve met before.  And of course Helen is no stranger to dance having starred with Baryshnikov in White Nights directed by her husband.
