Lemongirl
13 year old dd has asked for a stretch ladder. Has anyone got one and are they safe to use? Where can I buy, a quick look online and everywhere seems to be out of stock!
Mumofballetmaddaughter
Hi Lemongirl I have no idea as to whether or not these are safe to use and had to google to see what they are but did find some on eBay and this company which has them in stock. https://www.gymfactor.co.uk/stretch-ladders-gymnasts-dancers-1994-p.asp
Anna C
They look as if they’re for stretching into oversplits so personally I wouldn’t buy one for a teenager as I know *exactly* what dd’s physio would say. I’d be interested in @drdance‘s thoughts?
drdance
EEEEEEEK!!! I would NOT like the sound of any young dancer using these! Not only is there the potential for injury whilst using it, but if a young dancer has extreme amounts of passive flexibility they are much more prone to injury when they're dancing! Let me guess - either someone on instagram has one? If their teacher has recommended one I'd be seriously concerned...
Lemongirl
Thank you, she's not on Instagram but uses Snapchat and TikTok. I have no idea where she heard about them from.

They are discussed in this interesting thread about why the Australian Ballet stopped stretching: I know we’ve also had discussions about the dangers of passive stretching, stretching before completely warmed up, stretching at home and - on a slightly different tack - following dancers/young dancers on Social Media who post pictures and videos of themselves in oversplits and other contortions. At best, it’s a bad example and can cause minor injury, at worst, it can cause severe, training-ending injuries. I’ll see if I can find the thread I’m thinking of.
Canary
Remind all your dancers that flexibility alters due to hormones what comes naturally one term feels impossible the next. That is completely normal

Lemongirl
Thank you for this really helpful information. They don't sound like a good idea at all! I have sent the info to dd, hopefully it will put her off the idea.

Bluebird22
I saw something similar to this but a bit taller during lockdown - at first I thought it was a parents attempt at making an adjustable height barre 🤣
