UK petitions & campaigns - offer more support to the arts

Recommended Posts

I've had another message through from Campaign for the Arts about proposed cuts of around 50% to Scotland's equivalent of the Arts Council:  https://www.campaignforthearts.org/petitions/scotland-cuts/?

"The Scottish Budget contains a £7million cut to Creative Scotland (the equivalent of the Arts Council). Their chief executive has warned that “the risks to the cultural sector as we currently know and understand it have gone up enormously”, and that “we are now about to go beyond the tipping point”."

Result:

"The Scottish Government has completely abandoned its plans to cut funding for Creative Scotland, after more than 15,000 of us signed and shared our emergency petition.

This crucial result is down to you, for speaking out and showing your support for arts and culture in Scotland. It's proof that real change is possible when we come together to make it happen.

Announcing the Scottish Government's decision to abandon the cuts, Deputy First Minister John Swinney called this “a time when the country requires the inspiration that the culture and arts sector can provide for all of us”. Thank you for sending that message so powerfully.

The ongoing impacts of the pandemic haven't gone away, and neither have the cost-of-living crisis, inflation and older, more systemic challenges. Tomorrow, we'll continue our campaign to champion, defend and expand access to the arts for everybody across the UK.

But tonight we'll be celebrating with you. Thank you for making a positive difference."

gosh, does it only take around 15,000 signatures to affect change in Scotland? how many would be needed in England to achieve a similar thing i wonder?
