Marie
Czech National Ballet will premiere Marcia Haydée's 'Sleeping Beauty' on Thursday 29th April until 5th May on Youtube. It seems this was filmed fairly recently during the pandemic. The trailer looks really promising and I for one am excited about the costumes! I also added this as an event on the calendar. stucha
Just arrived on Youtube, two approx 30 min extracts of Ashton's La Fille mal gardée performed by the Bolshoi with delightful Nina Kaptsova and Ivan Vasiliev. From the 90s I think. It's interesting to see this ballet with a Bolshoi inflection. The Grigorovitch version is danced these days.
Naomi M
Japan has declared a state of emergency for the 3rd time in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo. This is the result of the corrupt government policies that were unable to secure vaccines, and the increasing number of new valiant infection cases. Therefore, almost all performances were cancelled within a day's notice. There was a family ballet festival called Ueno no Mori Ballet Holiday scheduled next weekend but sadly this was cancelled, so the festival went online and there are several offerings provided. https://balletholiday.com/2021/online/ such as Tokyo Ballet's Giselle (excerpt) Asami Maki Ballet's Paquita https://vimeo.com/537602119 Asami Maki Ballet's Raymonda act 3 https://vimeo.com/537602119 Inoue Ballet's Nutcracker in full https://vimeo.com/537595463 Also National Ballet of Japan's Coppelia by Roland Petit performances were cancelled, but they are planning to have a streaming of the performance without audience for free, so I will add information later.

Its their 2014 recorded version starring Carlotta Onesti and Gioacchino Starace as Titania and Oberon respectively. I suppose it does help that I love the Philip Glass music but Dawson has used it so well. I loved the fluid, expressive movements. The ballet is in 5 sections and opened with a duet that felt very poignant to me. In part 2 the swirling of the corps around the stage was absolutely mesmerising. And so it went on till the final solo. I was totally blown away!

I thought that the final solo danced by Riho Sakamoto was particularly touching... searching and finding hope. The more I see of Dawson, the more I admire him. Hi, Naomi. I’ve been watching the final show. It’s intermission time now. Such a different and cute version! Ooh, la, la! (Wouldn’t this be perfect for ABT?) Fabulous principals - Ono’s Swanilda is adorable. Watanabe so strong & sleek as Franz. I can’t wait to see Yamamoto shine as Coppelius in A2...one of the greatest character roles in the repertoire...Roland Petit himself used to dance it. Thanks for alerting us to this fabulous event!!! 👏 Well, time to return to my Virtual Tokyo.

It is a cute but bitter in the end production, and yes it might be nice for ABT. (I remember seeing Coppelia at ABT with Gillian Murphy and Marcelo Gomes about 15 years ago) Ayako Ono is one of the best ballerinas in Japan and Swanilda is the perfect role for her. Yamamoto is a former principal at the company and used to dance Franz in his prime years but his acting this time is really touching (and sometimes creepy but sophisticated). I also remember seeing Petit himself dance this role with much compassion. Hope you have enjoyed the second half as well!

I thouroughly enjoyed the second half too...finishing at my 3am, but I’m back up now. What a sharp and precise corps de ballet...Soldiers and Ladies of the Town. They’re almost doll-like too. Excellence and precision has been the reputation of this company for a long time. I have happy memories of their Raymonda - Maki Asami version - at the Kennedy Center 10+ years ago. BRAVI! What a treat to have seen this Coppelia live last night! Edited May 8, 2021 by Jeannette

What a treat to have seen this Coppelia live last night! Fabulous that you stayed up so late to see the live stream. Yes the corps de ballet of this company is very good, well rehearsed and today was the final performance so they are getting better day by day. Takafumi Watanabe is not Ayako Ono's regular partner so there might have been a little partnering issues but otherwise a good performance. Wonderful that you got the chance to see Raymonda at Kennedy Center, I envy you! Raymonda will be their next performance in June so fingers crossed that they can perform with audience this time.
