Opera and music online streaming 2019/20 season

Just finished watching Katie Mitchell's marvellous take on Bartok's Duke Bluebard's Castle with the Bavarian State Opera, available as VOD until 10 Mar 2020. https://operlive.de/.  If I remember correctly, streams provided by the Bavarian State Opera are accessible from the UK; I don't know about other countries.

In Mitchell's production, Nina Stemme plays Anna Barlow, a detective who sets out to investigate the disappearance of three women who had worked as escorts. John Lundgren is Bluebard.  I loved the introductory video, setting the scene, and very much filmed in the style of a thriller.  It was fascinating to observe how Judith wins over Bluebard to open the doors one after the other. And I found the outcome rather refreshing (no spoiler here but see the synopsis, available via https://operlive.de/).

Forthcoming live streaming this season here https://www.staatsoper.de/tv.html?no_cache=1

Live streaming by Stuttgart Opera this season here https://www.staatsoper-stuttgart.de/service/live/  (the site doesn't mention whether this comes with a geo block so I don't know about access from the UK / other countries).

Thanks, Duck.  The Bavarian seems to be coming through okay, so will try and watch it when I have time - I like Duke Bluebeard, or at least I did when I saw it at the ROH.  Can't tell about the Stuttgart since the timing's wrong, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Both the Bavarian State Opera and Stuttgart Opera have stepped up on (live) streaming while their performances have been cancelled.

Additional live streaming by the Bavarian State Opera over the coming weeks https://www.staatsoper.de/en/news/online-schedule-until-19-april.html

In addition to forthcoming live streaming, Judith/ Bluebeard's Castle is available as VOD for an another two weeks (definitely worth seeing imho).

Stuttgart Opera will make available as VOD a number of previously recorded performances over the coming weeks. They've created a hashtag "OpertrotzCorona" (Opera despite Corona).

There is no schedule of performance on their site as of now, only the first performance has been announced, and this will be Le Nozze di Figaro. https://www.staatsoper-stuttgart.de/spielplan/oper-trotz-corona/. NB The site does not exist in English, I don't know whether access to the video works from outside Germany but as the video is made available later today, we'll find out soon.

Also the link to the offer that JohnS mentioned in relation to the Berlin Philharmonic in another part of the forum https://www.digitalconcerthall.com/en/concerts

The Metropolitan Opera just announced that it would online-stream an opera every night, for free, as of this Monday, March 16 (Carmen, 2009)! This is due to the current COVID-19 crisis forcing the theatre’s closure. Details on metopera.org.

Week One: Carmen, Boheme, Trovatore, Traviata, Fille, Lucia & Onegin.

A few more links to streams & live streams

The Vienna State Opera is now offering free broadcasts of previous performances, too. A schedule until early April has been set up, details here https://www.wiener-staatsoper.at/en/staatsoper/news/detail/news/the-wiener-staatsoper-is-closed-but-continues-to-play-daily-online/

The Philhamonie de Paris has put online recordings of hundreds of performances https://live.philharmoniedeparis.fr/Concerts.html. The site comes with an English version so I hope this will be accessible from the UK.

Igor Levit has started to live stream daily "house concerts" a few day ago, access through his twitter account (not tonight though as he'll be part of a live stream by the Bavarian State Opera), the works are not announced in advance https://mobile.twitter.com/igorpianist?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Caught up with this today. Good to see an audience, even a small, socially distant one, enjoying music.

Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich started having a very small audience of 50 in the house this Monday at their live streamed weekly Monday concert (available to view free on demand here: https://www.staatsoper.de/tv.html ). There are two more concerts this season, on 22 and 29 June. They usually include a brief segment of ballet solos or pdd to recorded music as well as chamber music performed by members of the orchestra and vocal performances by opera singers.

Have been enjoying their weekly offerings (in varying degrees!).

Some of my friends are ballet AND opera goers.

and another friend is more Opera only and I’ve heard a few opera complaints and that they are definitely not going to see such and such a production or will definitely be giving certain operas a miss 😳....so I’d better check out with them first if there’s anything I should avoid ...well for a newby anyway.
I suppose it’s similar to ballet.... die hard ballet fans like myself will attend almost any ballet....well at least once ....though may sigh at certain choreographers but will give new works  a go in the hope of a miracle this time 🙄.... but some ballet goers will only go to the big well known classics as they know what they’re getting especially as these days tickets are not exactly cheap.

I don't know if we should be discussing Opera here, there may be some dispensation whilst we are in isolation, but Glyndebourne are streaming 'Der Rosenkavalier' in full, on you tube on 5th July. Not my favourite libretto, (men getting mixed up for women and visa versa) but the Richard Strauss music is stunning. Look out for the final trio and eventually the Orchestral suite.

A good way for Ballet lovers to be introduced to Opera could be through Operas that contain Ballet. One such recommendation is the Richard Eyre 2010 production of Carmen, for the Metropolitan Opera, on DVD and Blue Ray. It is beautifully choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, with two fine PDD's introducing the first and third Act, performed by Martin Harvey (Ex Royal Ballet) and Maria Kowroski (NYCB) and dancing from the cast. It stars Elina  Garanca, Roberto Alagna and  Barbara Frittoli. The dancing, acting and singing is sumptuous with a favourite of mine being the Michaela area from Act 3.
