Stirring, sensuous showcase of the physical form” The Irish Times

Following the critically acclaimed Swan Lake/ Loch na hEala, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Keegan-Dolan returns to Sadler’s Wells with a new production, MÁM, from Wednesday 5 - Friday 7 February in a Sadler’s Wells co-production.

The Irish-language word mám describes the pass that connects two sides of a mountain and is the inspiration for his new work. Bringing together the Irish concertina player Cormac Begley, the music collective s t a r g a z e and 12 dancers from around the world, MÁM is a meeting place between soloist and ensemble, classical and traditional, the local and universal.

Following its sold out and critically acclaimed run at the Dublin Theatre Festival from 25 September - 5 October, MÁM will make its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells.

As well as being an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells, Michael Keegan-Dolan is the Founder and Artistic Director of Teaċ Daṁsa, which was formed as a means to forge deeper connections with the traditions, language and the music of Ireland. Swan Lake/ Loch na hEala was the first production made by Teaċ Daṁsa and won the Irish Times Theatre Award 2017 for Best New Production and the UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Production 2018. MÁM is Keegan-Dolan’s second production for Teaċ Daṁsa and will tour internationally in 2020.

In addition to Swan Lake/ Loch na hEala, other previous collaborations with Sadler’s Wells include Rian and The Rite of Spring and Petrushka. In 2015-6 he was Guest Artistic Director of the National Youth Dance Company, the country’s flagship organisation for young dancers which is run by Sadler’s Wells. Keegan-Dolan’s previous choreography credits for Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre productions include Giselle, The Rite of Spring and The Bull which were all nominated for Olivier Awards – the latter winning the UK Critics’ Circle Award for Best Modern Choreography.

MÁM is co-produced by Teaċ Daṁsa, Dublin Theatre Festival; Sadler’s Wells London and New Zealand Festival of the Arts, with support from Nomad and NASC touring network.

This production is funded by an Arts Council Open Call Award. International touring is supported by Culture Ireland.

ABOUT SADLER’S WELLS
Sadler’s Wells is a world-leading creative organisation dedicated to dance in all its forms. With a rich theatrical heritage of over three centuries, it offers a year-round programme of performances and learning activities. Our mission is to make and share dance that inspires us all. Our vision is to create, through dance, a depth of connection beyond borders, cultures and languages, so we see ourselves in each other.

Audiences of over half a million come to Sadler’s Wells’ three London theatres each year, with many more enjoying our touring productions at venues across the UK and around the world and accessing our content through digital channels. Sadler's Wells commissions, produces and presents more dance than any other theatre in the world, embracing the popular and the unknown. Since 2005, we have helped to bring over 170 new dance works to the stage, many of them involving our 16 Associate Artists, three Resident Companies and four Associate Companies – the most exciting talents working in dance today.

Sadler’s Wells nurtures the next generation of talent through a range of artist development initiatives and reaches over 30,000 annually through our learning and engagement programmes.

Located in Islington, north London, Sadler’s Wells’ current building is the sixth to have stood on site since entrepreneur Richard Sadler first established the theatre in 1683. The venue has played an illustrious role in the history of theatre ever since, with The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and English National Opera having all started at Sadler's Wells.

Sadler’s Wells is to open an additional mid-scale venue in east London in 2022. The new space will be at the heart of the East Bank project, a new cultural and education district in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, which will also include BBC, UAL’s London College of Fashion, UCL and the V&A in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. As well as a 550-seat auditorium, our new venue will include a choreographic centre and a hip hop theatre academy, the first of their kind in the world to be run by a theatre.
