If I remember rightly, dd did as two summer schools aged 15 (we couldn’t afford any more!).  She was an Associate at one of the schools so we didn’t bother with their summer school.  I think she did London Childrens’ Ballet for fun and performance, followed by Elmhurst as that was the school she was least familiar with.

Hi SarahBallet
i previously commented on summer schools in other post, so will copy and paste. My DD did Vaganova summer course in Alicante and loved it. Also I have noticed that NKBS are doing winter course and there is potential to audition for Vaganova summer school in Italy (Julia Kasenkova is attending). As your DD is 15 she fit's in the age the winter course is aimed for.

From my DD experience I could recommend the following:

UK

Malvern/ OPES – for spring intensive

ENBS - tried spring and summer - not one for her, her feedback was 'ok to socialise not demanding enough', also placed in incorrect lower group so was not challenging enough

She has tried first time RB this summer but said is was good but not demanding enough

Portugal

The National Conservatory Dance School - https://www.eadcn.pt/en/  - very high standard of dancers, great lessons

Spain - summer

IB Stage - Barcelona

Russian Masters Ballet Camp in Alicante

Centre de Dansa de Catalunya - Catalunya

USA - tried only summer

Ellison Ballet – would recommend both programmes - Variations and PDD (very demanding classes and kids actually work and sweat)

The Alvin Ailey – fantastic teachers!

Thank you. Goodness - I hear such amazing things about Tring - why did she hate it?

My DD did a Tring summer school and didn't like it either.

She felt she didn't learn anything and everyone was just there to have fun and mess around!

DD did Laine summer school this year and loved it. She felt she'd learnt alot and they were pushed!

Would like to give 👍🏻  for YBS summer school too....

I do know some who feel it’s not always as hard work or intense or as many hours of daily dancing as some others but I rather like the fact that it’s quite social, fun & perhaps more a dancing holiday at a time when youngsters are perhaps ready to have some downtime & enjoy dance without the pressure of auditions/assessments/exams/shows.

“All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy” as the saying goes....

That is such a shame - I guess different people want different things though.

Thank you FlexiNexy really helpful.  Sorry do you mean that you can audition for Vaganova through NKBS?

@SarahBalletDid you find anymore information about the Vaganova auditions at NKBS?  It says they are in January but I can't find details.  We are thinking about trying for Vaganova and Bolshoi Ballet Academy.

Does anyone know what the standard will be to get in?

I’m pretty sure they held the audition as part of their winter intensive but could be wrong...

So I have spent the last hour going round in internet circles and have a serious headache!  I have eventually found details, in Italian, and  it looks like the audition was on 5th January which was at the same time as the Winter Intensive.  The link I saw originally didn't have a date and was in English.  Giving up for the night and will look again at summer schools another day!

They may still accept a video audition perhaps? But there’s a whole new headache for you....😂

Have given up on anything needing video as just so difficult to try sort!

I will look into it but the idea of doing a video fills me with dread - tops up the wine glass!! 😏

Dancing Kitty maybe ask your daughter to ask their favourite teacher or choreographer they have had in the past where they are teaching this summer. My DD jumped at the chance of being trained by certain people. We followed one teacher from RAD to ENB summer school. Just an idea

Thank you - we will give this try.  There was someone she liked from a Central course and we did make a point of following her and doing her courses and open classes but she has been busy with another project for the last few years.  This has definitely given me a new focus.  We were put off with ENB SS last year so not holding out for this year and DD is disappointed that NYB are not running their usual summer season.  We would love to wait and see what they might run over the summer but don't want to end up with nothing over the summer.

Cheers Dancibg Kitty - much 🍷🍷🍷needed; I so dread the whole idea of trying to get a video together!

We too had kind of worked around NYB as main Summer dance plan & now concerned missed out of things (like too late to apply for the ENBS Summer School audition.... so back to the need for yep, you guessed it, a video application aghHH!)

You mention ENBS SS; is your DD do this last year? Any feedback about it would be appreciated - thanks in advance (clinks glass again....metaphorically I hasten to add; balkwt hasn’t quite driven me to drink by 9am....yet! 🤣)

MyDD has attended the SS at Elmhurst and ENBS the summer she turned 15. So it was just before her audition season.
ENBS was physically challenging but learnt so much as they placed her in the older set. No social down time as the course is not residential. Accommodation is expensive if staying nearby in Chelsea. We used TripAdvisor.  Their audition work shop in the Oct was invaluable. Would recommend it to anyone embarking on auditioning at any of the other schools. Skills are very transferable.
Elmhurst was too much within her comfort zone. Wasn’t pushed enough. Great social down time.
Friends of DD have Birds, Laines and NBS SS’s. All reported as being Ab Fab but these SS’s do not offer pure classical unlike the others mentioned.
LSC offer SS’s. Which was on our agenda but dates clashed with other courses.

Dd just did Tring (and hated it so didn't apply) the year before she had done Bird College and OPES.

Hi Picturesinthefirelight,

Did your dd enjoy Bird? My dd is doing it this summer for a week, she’s 14. We’re hoping it will help her decide whether she wants to pursue dance as a career or go down the academic route when she’s older. She loves ballet but is more about her modern work these days.

Sparkly x
