World premières in 2020 include Geisha by Kenneth Tindall, Merlin by Drew McOnie and a new children’s ballet. David Nixon OBE’s blockbusters Cinderella and The Great Gatsby return for national tours.Northern Ballet will also perform Three Short Ballets in Newcastle and tour Mariana Rodrigues’Little Red Riding Hood nationally. 50th Anniversary Celebration Gala Marking the start of the Company’s anniversary programme, Northern Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Gala will see dancers from some of the world’s leading companies unite in a unique event celebrating Northern Ballet’s 50-year journey. Northern Ballet will be joined by guest starsfrom The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre performing excerpts from Northern Ballet’s repertoire and works connected to the Company’s history. Jan McNulty Posted June 6, 2019 Share Posted June 6, 2019 (edited) I think it is a wonderful concept that all the pieces performed will be excerpts from the Northern Ballet rep, old and new. I can't wait to see which excerpts the other participating companies will be dancing. Priority booking opened this morning (public booking on 13th June). Needless to say my friends and I have got our tickets! I should have added that it was a privilege to be at the launch event last night in Leeds. We all thoroughly enjoyed the danced excerpts. Anita Rani was a very enthusiastic host and both Kenny Tindall and Drew McOnie gave us an exciting glimpse into their new works. The Leader of Leeds City Council gave a speech towards the end of the evening and mentioned Bernard Atha, who was at the event. He did so much during his time at Leader for the arts in Leeds and for Northern Ballet in particular. Needless to say when we were invited to applaud him he got the biggest cheer of the night (and well deserved!). And - as proof were in the pudding so to speak - ABT are doing Marston's Jane Eyre again for the 19/20 Met season. Here's to it becoming a staple .... Think Bronte would have agreed: 'More power to the people!' .... Think too it may have been the venue in the Met's case that may have initially overwhelmed the diminishing critical fold. With time they (the critics as much as the supportive ABT audiences) will come I know to accept, respect and ultimately revel in the glory of Marston's stunning intimacy - so true to the novel itself. In some ways I think they will look upon Marston as filling their current De Mille / Tudor void. Both dealt within a similar terrain/scope and survived by virtue of their imaginative choreographic merits.
