INTERNATIONAL DANCE ARTIST VISITS UK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DANCEEAST’S SUMMER SEASON

DanceEast continues their tenth anniversary year of the Jerwood DanceHouse on a high with their new Summer Season, featuring not one, but two Double Bills, one of which welcomes international artist Mohamed Toukabri to the UK for the first time and a variety of exciting community events.

The season commences with INTOTO DANCE, a performance from London Studio Centre. An evening of new dance from DanceEast’s Junior Associate Artist, Kaia Goodenough, Nathan Johnston, Victoria Fox and Luke Brown, reflecting the possibilities of contemporary dance today.

“Palpable drive, passion and energy that comes from these young dancers. It’s a chance to see the future of contemporary dance.” – Wayne Parsons, Choreographer and Artistic Director

This season DanceEast present two Double Bills, this new programming format will allow dance supporters to see two new works from two upcoming artists in one evening. Brendan Keaney, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast says: “We are determined to introduce dance to as many people as possible.”  The first of the Double Bills comes from The Hiccup Project and Alleyne Dance.

Comedic dance-theatre company duo, The Hiccup Project will present Lovely Girls, a poignant, hilarious and truthful exploration into what it is like to be a young woman today, challenging the confusing, and often ridiculous, contradictions, clichés and expectations.Audiences will be in for an evening of thought-provoking laughter.

A Night’s Game from Alleyne Dance reflects the turmoil and strife of human emotion when faced with the prospect of incarceration. Inspired by true life events, Alleyne Dance create a dark, atmospheric and abstract work that is physically challenging and powerful.

Stuart Waters presents ROCKBOTTOM as part of PULSE Festival. PULSE is an actively curated festival providing an environment in which artists can develop, grow and connect within their chosen fields and benefit from the networks associated with the New Wolsey Theatre and China Plate. ROCKBOTTOM is an intensely personal piece exploring one man’s journey into and out of the deep end of human existence. Combining compelling storytelling, physical choreography and humour, ROCKBOTTOM rockets between highs, lows, ecstasy and despair with heart-warming honesty.

“A truly captivating performance, deeply poignant, with cheeky audience interaction and laugh-out-loud humour!” – Homotopia Festival 2018

DanceEast’s second Double Bill of the season comes from Lanre Malaolu and Mohamed Toukabri.

Fusing hip hop, physical theatre and spoken word, Elephant in The Room explores mental health and toxic masculinity. Lanre Malaolu highlights how race, class and culture can affect the way we choose to address the stigma around mental health, and what happens when we don’t.

Mohamed Toukabri’s The Upside Down Man (The Son of The Road) delves deeply into the experience of a young man finding himself in dance and in Europe. This autobiographical solo shares a personal yet universal migrant experience of being in-between two countries, two cultures and two traditions. Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast first saw Mohamed Toukabri’s work in Dusseldorf and was blown away and wanted to share his work with UK audiences.

OSCiLLATE, a ground-breaking tap dance experience from Old Kent Road explores human interaction and the effects of miscommunication in relationships. Using movement, sound and light, the audience will be taken on a journey of misunderstanding, confusion, fear and misconceptions – to compassion, acceptance, resolution and equality.

As part of their tenth anniversary celebrations, DanceEast presents House to Home, a performance featuring over 100 community dancers, inspired by the story of how the Jerwood DanceHouse has been and will be home to so many. House to Home will capture the day-to-day life of the building, in an event that celebrates everything housed in the building – now and in the future.

Residents at the Jerwood DanceHouse, the DanceEast Centre For Advanced Training (CAT) present their End of Year Show. Students will perform a mixed bill of original works commissioned by some of the most influential national and international choreographers – including James Wilton, Jess and Morgs, Joseph Toonga, Protein Dance, Sarah Blanc and Uchenna Dance. There will also be a restaging of Umanoove/Didy Veldman’s The Knot that premiered at DanceEast back in 2018.

DanceEast, in partnership with Glass House Dance and Lowestoft Museum present Lowestoft DanceMap: Life at the Museum, a performance that unearths stories from the museum’s exhibitions. The exhibitions will come to life, spilling out into the park through dance and music, in a joyful celebration of the museum.

DanceEast ends the bursting Summer Season in Lowestoft with the First Light Festival, a new 24-hour, multi-arts festival on the beach. DanceEast have programmed the Moon Dance stage with performances and workshops from Old Kent Road, Swing Dance with Temujin Gil and Sunanda Biswas, an old-fashioned Tea Dance and Baby Loves to Boogie disco event. As part of the First Light Festival, DanceEast have also commissioned Circadian, a durational dance work by Rosemary Lee.  On the hour, every hour, one of 24 dancers – ranging in age from 8 – 80 years, will perform a short solo. With it’s moments of intensity and stillness, Circadian draws upon the complex connection with time and the cyclical rhythms of birth and death, light and darkness.

DanceEast’s programme embraces the artistic, educational, social and recreational roles that dance plays in the local and national arts ecology. It places artists at the heart of the organisation, presenting high-quality, high-profile dance work in the Jerwood DanceHouse and offering artists support, development and stimulation via programmes such as the Associate Artist Scheme, Rural Retreats, Professional Development workshops, advanced level classes and the Choreographic Development Fund. DanceEast has been running a range of innovative community projects for over thirty years, working closely with partners on local, national and international projects.

DanceEast is a registered charity, funded by Arts Council England, Suffolk County Council, Ipswich Borough Council, and donations from individuals, businesses, trusts and foundations. Thanks to Catalyst: Evolve funding, all donations DanceEast receives before 31 August 2019 will be matched by Arts Council England £1 for £1, doubling their value. There has never been a better time to donate, and contribute to the future of great dance at the Jerwood DanceHouse.
