It is so refreshing to see the ballet world represented on TED Talks! Here's the one Miko Fogarty gave, published a couple of days ago; her attitude seems so mature for such a young woman - Brava!

Thanks so much for posting that, TTB.  What an interesting 10 minutes.  I didn't realise Miko is now studying biology at Berkeley!  Best of luck to her.

There's quite a long thread on her somewhere on Doing Dance, Sim, because I was certainly aware that she was studying some sort of natural sciences somewhere.

So glad she has found something so satisfying for her ....I knew it was something medical but not exactly which part she was specialising in. 

Her dad is on the Sciences  side and so is her brother so guess this was an influence from home as well.

I thought she had great promise as a dancer but perhaps it was all a bit too intense too young in the end.....just shows that it takes more than talent though to be able to forge a successful career in ballet. Not everyone is cut out for the overall lifestyle no matter how good their dancing. That fear of letting everyone down must have been pretty awful. 

Glad she still keeps a hand in ballet and is now able to enjoy it without all the pressure. She has great public speaking skills too so an accomplished young lady one way or the other!

 

Thanks for posting this ....always like having up dates about Miko as have followed her progress since the film First Position! 

Michaela de Prince was also in this film and has gone on to be such a star in the ballet world.

There is another interview with her by KQED news ....California based I think......also talking about her decision to change track but with some more serious allegations regarding her coach ....he is under arrest at the moment ...but not from Mikos allegations. 

I do think it genuinely was her own dream for a while but I think all the extra training and competitions she entered caused her to burn out by the time she was about 16. 

Her mother and father were  very supportive when she finally made the decision to give it all up when in Birmingham ....she had had health and injury problems at that point. But it must have been difficult for her as she was always very appreciative of how much money had been spent on her training etc. I suspect many young people feel like this in other spheres of excellence when realising it's not for them after all.
