Help needed decoding British system

Recommended Posts

Hi

I’m after some advice about British contemporary schools. My daughter has been offered places at Trinity Laban and Northern Contemporary to study bachelor degrees. We are from Australia and I don’t know which is better! Northern is in the same conservatoire as Rambert and London Contemporary, but I don’t even understand what that means! Grateful for any feedback!

Both institutions are first class. The Conservatoire grouping is really just to process admissions and doesn't have much impact on the students on the course. Did your dd audition in person or by dvd? A general feel for the place can help decide. She should study course content carefully to see which appeals. Is she hoping to perform, to choreograph or to teach? A major difference too is location. Northern is based in Leeds, a wonderful vibrant city with ballet & dance companies and other interesting culture. However, Laban is based in London with all that can offer. I had a pupil at Laban some years ago who loved it. I currently have a pupil offered a place at Laban for this September, but she still has some other auditions in April.

It is indeed hard to make the decision if you haven't been able to get a personal feel for the places.  As I said, both institutions are considered first class for Contemporary training, so it is hard to give recommendations.  Their websites have lots of information and videos, which are all very positive.  I don't know what the living arrangements are for NCDS in Leeds, perhaps someone else can answer that question.  At Laban the first years nearly all go into purpose built Student accommodation which is just a few minutes walk from the Laban building.  The first years from Trinity, the music part of Trinity Laban Conservatoire also use this accommodation so the students all get to know each other, and often undertake projects together.  After the first year, students group together to rent flats or houses from private landlords.

Thanks to everyone who has replied and sent messages. We are actually in Europe (dd is auditioning for PARTS tomorrow and was invited to finals at Codarts and London - unfortunately she didn’t make the final cut). We are thinking of dashing back to London from Brussels so that she can have a look round at Trinity Laban. She will be able to get a feel for the place maybe. Unfortunately Northern are on holidays (and also I am not sure we would have time to get there).
